I have a Mac mini with the latest OS X (10.4.8 or so).. It has a cable
modem plugged in via Ethernet. I turn on Internet Sharing with the
Ethernet as to share from, and Airport "to computers using". I set a
40 bit wireless key. My PC laptop (Windows XP) detects the network,
prompts for the key, but after that just times out and fails. Any
idea how to do this? I basically want to use my Mac as a wireless
router as I cant afford one right now.

Thanks,

Tom

Because WEP password text to hex value is non-standard between
Windows and MacOSX, you need to either A) specify a 5 character
password for the 40 bit key, or find the hex value and use that on
the PC.

A 5 character password is exactly 40 bits, so there is no munging
of the value to create a 40 bit hex key.

However, you should be able to pick up an 802.11g WiFi router
mailorder rather inexpensively if you do some searching

I am getting so frustrated with the WEP password thing that I am
seriously considering turning it off! After all, I live so far from my
neighbors that no one could possibly pick up the signal anyway.

I tried both passwords like "Ab1cd" and "12345", no go on either.

If I disable security, it connects just fine. But then I can't get
onto the internet.

First, make sure the sharing works without security. Try the set up
with no security and get it working. Then add in security. Forget WEP
as it can be cracked in 10 min or less. Instructions have appeared on
the net for some time. Use WPA-PSK as it is more secure. Any reasonable
PeeCee can support WPA so it should be compatible.

Forget WEP it is more trouble than it is worth in mixed environments!

Thanks! That did it... Works without security now, but not with.

In the sharing preference panes make sure you have web sharing turned
on. I seem to remember a problem when that was not on.

Try WPA-PSK security if the laptop supports it. WEP is a real pain in
mixed PC and Mac environments.
