Is it an Apple-brand drive? If it's not, then the Apple disk utilities
(like HD SC Setup) won't recognize it. You'll need to either hack the
program to recognize your drive or use a third-party formatter.
Formatting it on a PC will probably not work, since Macs use a different
partition table mechanism that PC operating systems don't support
without third-party software support. And Mac OS (up to version 9.22)
requires a driver to be installed on a disk's partition in order for the
OS to recognize it, even when it is formatted properly. (Mac formatting
utilities will write the driver to the partition during the format
process.)
Do some web searching for help hacking the Apple formatter. If you'd
rather buy a commercial one, I know of two that work well. One is
Anubis, by CharisMac, and the other is Hard Disk Toolkit, by FWB.
LaCie's Silverlining utility will also work, but it's not sold
separately. (It comes bundled with LaCie hard drives.)
