Can anyone give me a pointer to instructions for releasing the old power
supply in the easiest way? The first look indicated lots of screws, a
more simple way would be fine.

There are only two screws: one in the upper middle of the rear chassis and
one inside the Mac in front of the power supply. Once you removed these two
screws, shift the powersupply towards the front side of the Mac.
