I'm getting really desperate here because I am getting a string of
useless advice on this issue. I've already tried installing from Safe
Boot and copying the CD onto my hard drive first, and it's always the
same thing. During the restart of the installation process, I'm told
that I'm not logged in as the administrator! I am logged in as the
administrator because that's the only possibility on my computer. Can
someone tell me why it thinks I'm not logged in as the administrator?
That's a hurdle I can't get past because when that dialog box comes up,
my only option is to select "Quit" and then there's no way to finish
the installation. (Oh yeah, and someone suggested I get the 7.0.2
update, but that's also pointelss since I can't install version 7 in
the first place!) BTW, I'm running the latest version of Tiger 10.4.6. |

I'm sorry, I know how desperate it can feel.
Look, your logic about necessarily being an administrator sounds right, and
I'm just a passer-by in this group and not an expert, and I don't know the
answer, and I don't want to contribute with a useless suggestion.
However, have you confirmed with the following quick check (that I would do
in my OS X 10.3.9)?
Go to System Preferences/Accounts. Does your account icon show the word
"administrator".

Yes, I am the administrator. I purchased the computer and I live
alone, so there's no other possibility. I did set up an account for my
nephew so he can play games when he comes to visit, but I'm definitely
not booting up in his account. I'm logged in under my name, which
again, is the only possibility for the admin account. In fact, my
computer is set up to force a user to login at startup, so I have to
choose either my account or the "Kids" account. (And I already tried
setting up an automatic login to my account, and that doesn't make a
difference during the install process.) Thanks for your suggestion,
though. |

Well, as I didn't notice any solution/response from a guru yet, here's
another thought from me for what it's worth.
From your first posting in this thread, I get an impression that you're
believe you're logged in as an administrator in Safe Mode.
That implies to me that one has to log in when Safe Mode starts. Does one
have to log in then? If not, would that explain why Safe Mode tells you
you're not logged in as an administrator?

The following message from me hasn't shown up in my newsgroup window after

All boots and restarts have a login page. In other words, I don't
allow the admin account (my account) as the default anymore. That is
to make sure that I can prevent my nephew from accessing my account
when he comes over and plays computer games. Before I created his
account, I only had one account - mine. |

Have you tried repairing disk permissions? |

Yes, and it didn't make a difference. I did however find a workaround
that makes no sense whatsoever -- when it told me to restart to
complete the installation I simply ignored the window and went back and
clicked on the installer icon again (fortunately it let me bypass the
window). The installer now recognized I was at step 2 of the process
and let me continue without ever asking me to log in as the
administrator. |

For some unknown reason, this happens on rare occasions. The only way
to resplve it is to uninstall VPC using the uninstaller in the Tools &
Manuals folder on the installation CD. Then reboot the Mac and
re-install VPC. |

That doesn't make any sense - that's completely useless advice for
anyone experiencing the problem I outlined (did you actually read my
post?) Uninstalling and reinstalling have nothing to do with this
particular issue. I did plenty of uninstalls and reinstalls with the
same outcome. The solution involves NOT restarting the computer as the
instructions say, but simply going back to the installer program and
continuing without the restart. |

I already found a solution and posted it on another thread and it
doesn't involve reinstalling the OS. |
