I don't know if this will enable you to scan remotely, but I used
Bonjour for Windows (download here:
<http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows_readme.html>
This enabled me to print wirelessly from an XP laptop to an HP Laserjet
1022 connected to my G4 desktop running Tiger. I had the same problem
you did initially: enabled printer sharing on the mac but still couldn't
manage a connection. The Bonjour (zero config networking) assistant
worked like a charm, though.
