Hi,

I have a G5 with airport and an Airport Base station connected to a DSL
modem. This connection works fine. I would like to share this
connection with another G5 that doesn't have an airport card.

Both Macs are running 10.3.9

Here's what I did:

Connected the two G5s via an ethernet hub.
Turned on Internet Sharing on the Airport G5
(i.e. "Share Airport connection with computers using built-in ethernet")

According to the Mac help, this should be enough.

The ethernet connection between the two G5s works (e.g. I can do
filesharing between the two)

What am I missing?

Thanks

Alan

Well I don't get any errors, except that the non-airport G5 doesn't get
a connection.

This isn't possible due to the relative locations of the base station
and the other G5.

You don't need a hub; the G5's are new enough to sort out a direct
connect themselves.

How is the network of the non-AirPort G5 configured? How does it get
its IP address? What is specified as the DNS server? What is specified
as the router?

Ok, but I assume that the hub won't interfere?

It is set to configure using DHCP. There is no DNS server specified.

The IP address that shows up is 192.168.2.2
The Router address shows up as 192.168.2.1

If no DNS server is specified, the G% won't be able to resolve a host
name to an IP address. Look at the DNS server for the AirPort connected
G% and replicate that. You might be able to get away with specifying
the DNS server the same as the router.

This doesn't seem to have any effect. (And there is no DNS server listed
in the Airport G5 either, but it works, because the Airport base station
gets the correct DNS through DHCP I think.)

The problem seems to be that these addresses are not the correct ones,
since the internal addresses that the base station gives out are
10.x.x.x addresses.

No, those addresses are okay. Internet Sharing adds another layer of
Network Address Translation (which is okay). The G5 in the middle is
routing traffic from one network to the other.

That's irrelevant. That's the address range for the wireless network.
The wired network must be a different address range.

These addresses seem correct if 192.168.2.1 is the address of the
Airport G5's Ethernet NIC.
