Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>printing (more info?)

I've networked a G4 desktop, an ibook, and an HP C4180 printer
using an Airport Extreme. At first, I attached the printer directly to
the desktop computer and shared it. That worked fine, but the desktop
had to be always powered up in order to print from the laptop.
I hooked the printer directly to the Airport Extreme and set it
up again. Everything still works fine, but the desktop computer has to
be turned on (like before) in order for the ibook to see the printer.
So, I still can't print from the laptop without turning on the
desktop. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks

DM-

Try using the Printer setup utility to add a printer, and find out how
many the iBook can see. My guess is two - one direct to the AirPort,
and one shared by the G4.

Even though you moved the printer to the AirPort, your iBook is still
set up to print to the shared printer, which the G4 Desktop is still
sharing!

Thank you!
First, I neglected to mention an important piece of information. The
g4 desktop is directly connected to the Airport Extreme with an
ethernet cable. It has no wireless card. The HP appears as a shared
printer from this computer.

Now, I followed your directions. On the ibook, I went into Printer
Setup Utility and clicked on add a printer. Two printers appear. Both
have exactly the same name. One is a "shared printer" and the other is
a "bonjour" printer. When I try to add the bonjour printer, I get
error number -9672.

Any ideas?

DM-

The only thing I can think of, is that the sharing process is
interfering with adding the printer via bonjour. Try disconnecting the
G4 Ethernet cable, recycle power to the AirPort and see if that makes a
difference.

I didn't have any luck, but then I found this:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00777...&dlc=en

This pretty well sums it up. I'm not willing to try it, because you
lose the ability to scan. I'll just continue to use a shared printer
unless HP changes something.

Thanks for your help!
