Archived from groups: microsoft>public>mac>rdc (more info?)

FIrst off, Does Remote Desktop Conncetion Client for Mac work with
Windows XP Home edition, becuase that;s what I have and I have the
remote dekstop program on it. (it came with it). I downloaded the
program on My Mac OSX and did everything it said. I typed in the IP
Address of My windows computer, my login name for my windows computer
and my password for my windows computer. I have no clue what a Domain
is so I left that blank (its probably osmething obviuose that I am
realy stupid to miss) I click connect and get an error message that
said something about "Not being able to connect, make sure everything
is enabled, try again later or contact you administrator". I have tried
using different computer names, my workgroup name. Nada. Please help me
someone.

The RDC client will only work with Windows Server's Terminal Services or
with Windows XP Professional. It will not work with Home edition.

Hope this helps! bill

Steve - just to amplify William Smith's answer:

There are two parts to Remote Desktop--the client portion, which is
available for any version of windows from Windows 95 and up, and for the Mac
under OS/X--and the host, or server portion, which is only available as part
of the OS in Windows XP Professional, and Windows 2000 Server versions, and
Windows Server 2003.

So--what you are missing in XP Home is the server or host part. There's no
way to add this in, except to upgrade to XP Pro.

Nada,

The two replies you received are correct. On the server side you have
to have XP Pro or Windows Server. However, that's not the end of it,
though I hope in your case if you upgrade it will be. I have XP pro on
my server side. I have been unsuccessful in connecting my Mac with OS
10.3.9 using RDC as a client despite support from Cisco, the
manufacturer of my firewall. No one seems to be able to figure out why
I can not make the connection with RDC. If you do upgrade and have the
same connection problem and ultimately solve it, let me know. But I
hope if you upgrade you will be fine. For what it's worth many people
who use a Mac with RDC to connect to a XP Pro server say it works.

In case it helps:

You need access through the firewall for port 3389, TCP. That's the only
port needed.

Additionally, in some situations, name resolution on a Windows network may
not work properly with a Mac--I ran into this today. I had to use the IP
address of the target machines, which worked fine.
