FYI,

while following the Falcon 4.0 for Mac I found the following in the
Falcon forum at Delphi (http://forums.delphiforums.com/macf4/start). In
short Graphsim is interested to allow some of us to assist in porting
newer Falcon to Mac.

Last week I e-mailed Amy Lorance about what would be needed to get F4 AF
for MAC started. She stated that finding people available to help do the
port would help speed things along. I automatically thought of you guys!
Dragon, Alex, Tony and Guns. Go through your rollodex and pull some
names out of your magic hats and send them an e-mail offering your
services. (I didn't think I should write her and tell her your mail
contacts without your permission(s)

This sounds REALLY promising!
If you like, send me mail telling me your availability and I'll forward
a list of names to her instead of her getting a bunch of mail from
different sources.

Here is my reply to her from last weeks e-mail.
================
If you need people to do the F4-to-MAC 'port' work, I can guide you to
at least 10 willing persons with the capabilities and computer
processing power to accomplish the task as long as the code is
available..

I understand that an NDA (Non-Disclosure-Agreement) may be required. No
problem. We will sign it.

The staff I have in mind is more than capable of completing the task of
porting the new F4 to a MAC format!
The problem we've had is that the 'code' for the current MAC version of
F4 has not been available to the end users, unlike the PC user. If we
had access to it, the MAC version of Falcon 4.0 would be de-bugged and
stable for all MAC end-users.

Names and e-mail addresses will be supplied on request for your perusal.

Thank you very much for your prompt replies Amy,

I'm running Falcon on OSX w/ Openglide. This driver is getting better
everyday, and has already come to the point where it looks great.

Hmm...sorry, I wouldn't know. I assume you've googled?

Nice card.

What problem did you have?

I can run Falcon under Classic, but it reverts to the software driven
graphics.

X-Plane also has stopped working for me since 7.61 update...the sim and
sounds seem like they are running, but the entire scene is smeared and
torn. I have to Force Quit to get out of the sim because I can't see
anything in the interface. I've informed them about it, but they seemed
stumped in their reply.

I also downloaded and fired up the open-source Flight Gear sim last
night (which looks like it has some potential...) and the ledgends in
the menus were all smeared.

Here's the link if you'd like to try it:

http://www.flightgear.org/ <- info

http://macflightgear.sourceforge.net/ <- get the sim here

I chalk all this up to still running my stock Rage 128 card and not
having full Quartz support and all the new bling...or that my 128 just
isn't cutting it for some of the more intensive stuff.

What Mac are you using the rage 128 with?

I used to have that one in my G4/400, and upgraded to a Radeon 8500. I
find the Rage 128 rather limited for 3D games - not enough
VRAM/features. Thru the Radeon 9700 Pro I ended my upgrading w/ nVidea
6800. Starting w/ the 9700 Pro I found that the card was maxed out while
giving me about 95% of available eyecandy from software that I'm using
(I still have the 9700 Pro). With the nVidea 6800 I find that this card
is not limiting the software anymore, tho the apps I use don't get me
more eyecandy compared to the 9700 Pro, however it's faster hence good
for my flight sims: Falcon and X-plane 7/8.

It's been a while that I checked out this one. It's come a long way and
got great potential. I'll have a go w/ it and see how it develops. I
like the runway views - they seem more natural. I get about 10-15fps on
the PBG4/800 (ATI Rage Mobility 7500 - M7 /32MB vram). On the PMG5 Dual
2.5 I got about 65fps.

I have a G4/500 with 1.5G of RAM running Tiger. It's pretty much stock
with the exception of adding a 4 port USB card and an ATA 133 controller
so I can have three drives internal. I can boot Jaguar, Tiger or 9.2.2
from any of the three.

Falcon runs pretty nicely for me from the 9.2.2 boot, as do the earlier
editions of X-Plane.

Do ATI claim this 9600 Pro can be fitted in a G4/500? Would that make
sense anyway, cos the bandwidth to send data to and from that card may
be limiting the card's performance. I can't find anything specific on
the ATI site other than it fits G4 and G5 systems. I thought the AGP
slot were different on the diff generations of G4s.

Something else: this link got some nice pic galleries and videas.

Yeah - I wondered about that myself. The new card is speced for a 4X
AGP slot, and the slot in my Sawtooth is speced at 2X. I think you have
to have one of the Quicksilver machines or later before you get a 4X
interface.

That, and the "300 Watt power supply recommended" note caught my
attention. The OEM supplys are speced at 200 Watts according to what I
see on Apple's website. What I'll probably do is wait a bit until some
reviews come out as to how the new card is working for folks.

I've been watching ATI 8500 cards on e-Bay, but if this new one works
out I'll go for it. The price is about comparable, and I'm sure the
tech has advanced. Not to mention that I like the thought of being able
to use the new 30" Cinema display...I have one of the 22" ones at
present, but there's always room to grow...if not the funds...

Nice site - I'll have to spend some time browsing around there. I have
a single engine private ticket, but there aren't any planes for rent
where I am...so I've let my currency lapse.

There's a glider club in the area though, so a bunch of us at work are
talking over joining and getting back to it via that route. The eastern
slope of the Sierras offers some of the best soaring conditions in the
world, from what I'm told. Getting the new rate would get me re-current
in any event.
