The LG external drives have a couple features I could use: USB and
Firewire, plus the ability to read DVD-RAM.

Anybody have any experience with any of these on Mac OS X (10.2, 3 or 4)?

Search Accelerate Your Mac's drive comaptibility database:

You don't have to buy a particular brand of drive to get USB and
FireWire. Just get one of the many Mac-compatible "combo" enclosures for
optical drives.

Accelerate Your Mac has a great, big database, but much of the info is
incomplete, especially in the external drive category. The people
responding often don't include adequate descriptions of their Mac, OS
version, etc. Their experience is usually with DVD-R or RW only, and
some of them don't know about Patchburn.

Hence I was looking here for personal stories.

The best price I've seen for an external, FW/USB 16x LG multi everything
drive is $90 Canadian. The 5.25" FW/USB enclosures run about $60, and
there aren't many bare drives that handle DVD-RAM. Panasonics are a lot
more expensive. So it seems like a good deal, if I don't end up with a
ninety dollar coaster maker.

I put a GSA-4120B into an external firewire case, and have had good
results with it.
