Hi Lewej!
This sounds like you've been using a single name for your server address
rather than its fully qualified domain name. On the same network
computers can broadcast for names of other machines and they will
receive a reply. However, routers do not pass broadcasts.
If you're using the server name:
server
you should probably be using:
server.domain.com
