Post subject: Dock icons cut in half
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>system (more info?)

Something weird just started happening tonight with my Dock. Several of
the dock icons are getting cut in half. Draw a diagonal from the
top-left to bottom-right, and the upper right portion of the icon is
missing. I normally hide the Dock, but it happens with it hidden or
visible. And it doesn't matter if I have the dock at left (my normal
location) or the bottom. The icons that this happens to seem random,
and as I change the size of the dock it shifts around.

I tried restoring my dock plist from Time Machine and restarting the
dock, as well as logging out and back in.

It's not just happening in my regular user account, it's also in a
pristine test account.

I uploaded an image of the dock from the test account:

How do those icons appear in Finder windows?

FWIW, I had an analogous problem back in the fall/winter: The backgrounds in
the labels of my dock icons would suddenly begin to fade -- initially fairly
quickly, then gradually (over days or weeks) becoming completely "washed
out." Here is a "time lapse" image sequence of what I'm talking about:

http://img412.imageshack.us/i/fadingdockiconlabels.png/

The only "solution" was to reboot. That, however, was only a temporary
solution, as the problem would begin anew.

I tried all sorts of things (repairing permissions, running DU and TechTool
Pro, etc., etc.), but nothing helped. IIRC, I then began to trash a bunch of
"clutter" (old "demo" apps and other files, all of which were of no use to
me and simply wasting space), and followed that by a combo OS update (I
don't recall if it was one of my long-overdue updates, or a repeat of a
then-recent one). After that, the problem (coincidentally?) ceased.

Normal.

I haven't tried rebooting yet, I'm going to give that a try.

For me, rebooting provided a temporary fix only; hopefully, it'll work
better for you.

I'll also be upgrading to SL soon. Hopefully whatever bug this was is
gone there.
