I have a DVD-Ram Drive in my WindTunnel G4, that seems to have finally
died. In looking for a replacment I see that NEC is making a really
nice drive that does Dual Layer +/- as well as Ram and +/-RW. What I am
wondering is if most these E-IDE drives use a "Common Instruction Set",
and if they OSX 10.4.x will talk to them driectly, or do they need
specific Drivers.

www.xlr8yourmac.com has a big database of external and internal drives.

10.4 seems to work pretty well with most of the internal drives straight
out of the box. I use a Samsung drive in a Firewire external box that
used to house a QPS DVD-RAM drive and 10.4 reads and writes DVD-RAM as
well as burning CDs and DVDs. I haven't tried any dual layer media yet.
