Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Intel

I can successfully connect my Mac (at home, using VPN) using RDC 2.0.0 to my laptop when it is at work on my business network. But I cannot get the Mac (at home) to connect to my PC when it also is at home. Are there special settings on one or both computers, or the home router to get this to work?

I have tried that, namely, typing the PC's IP address in the Mac's RDC field for Computer. Still no success - get the message "Mac cannot connect..." Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Are you trying to use the same address to connect to your Windows
computer at home that you'd use at work? You probably need to specify
the IP address of the machine while both are at home.

Hope this helps!

Can you ping your home PC from your Mac? If so, is Remote Desktop
enabled on the PC? Check in Control Panel - System - Remote

Remote Desktop is definitely turned on my PC laptop - this is the same commputer I can access via RDC from my Mac (at home) when the PC laptop is at work.

No, I do not use the Apple Location switcher. The Mac is at home, does not go back and forth to the office.

With both computers at home,I tried pinging the PC laptop's IP address from the Mac, and got: ".....10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0% packet loss round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.420/0.477/0.653/0.062 ms"
So that means both computers are on the network, correct? I have hooked them to my router with cable, avoiding wireless for the time being. Still, when I enter the PC Laptop's IP address in RDC on the Mac, I get the spinner for about twenty seconds, then the error message "The Mac cannot connect to Window-based computer." Does the fact that I see the spinner instead of an error message right away mean anything? Again, RDC IS working from this same Mac to this same PC laptop when it is on my network at work. In that case I use VPN on the Mac before starting the RDC session.

You can ping using the Network Utility found in /Applications/Utilities.
You'll need to enter the IP address that your Windows computer is
using at home.

Do you use Mac OS X's Location switcher found under the Apple menu? if
so, then you may have settings in your home location that are affecting
your ability to connect.

Hope this helps!

I should have asked earlier: When you say "cannot get the Mac (at home)
to connect" what are you seeing? Do you get to the login screen? Or When
you attempt to connect do you receive a message telling you that the
computer can't be found?

If you're seeing the login screen and then attempting to log in with a
domain account while offline from the network then that may not be allowed.

I do not see the log in screen of the PC laptop, instead I get the message: "The Mac cannot connect to the Windows-based computer" after about twenty seconds of the spinner.
Conditions: both computers hard wired to a router; PC laptop logged off but on (control-alt-delete screen). IP address of the PC laptop entered in Mac RDC. Remote access allowed on the PC laptop.
