Hello all,

I made the switch to mac just a few weeks ago. Everything seems to work
like it should on my iMac and my MBP.

One of the few difficult things I encountered is viewing .avi and some
..mpg files using Quicktime or Quicktime Pro. I have tried Windows Media
Viewer but that gives only relief as far as .wmv format is involved.

Is there a solution, where can I get Quicktime compatible codecs that
run on my macs ?

Tia,

Hans

I'm surprised that mpg files don't work for you. Every one I've ever
tried worked. Not so with wmv or avi.
Download <http://www.videolan.org/vlc/> which clears up most wmv files.
For the rest a Mac can do try <http://www.flip4mac.com/>.
I honestly haven't tried flip4mac, but it seems to be highly regarded.

Sure you can. I have searched the internet for Quicktime codecs for Mac
OS X and found 63 of them in one package. You can try demonoid.com and
search for "Quicktime QT codecs"

There is an extra fee for MPEG-2

As of yesterday, anyway, flip4mac was saying it was not yet
supported or available for the intel macs, although there is a
work-around I guess that some of those who actually understand it may
weigh in with info about soon. (g)

Thanks for your concern both of you.
I'm not really sure about .mpg indeed but .avi and .xvid seem to be
more troublesome.

I forgot to mention flip4mac myself as I encountered a non-supporting
error when I tried to install it.

You will have trouble with MPEG-2 files in QuickTime unless you have
the ($20) MPEG-2 Playback Component installed. Even then, you will
encounter difficulties (no, or garbled, audio) if the MPEG-2 is using
AC3 (Dolby Digital) audio rather than PCM or MP2 audio.

In any event, these files are playable with vlc, as are almost every
divx, xvid, etc AVI file I've encountered.

The thing about AVI is that it's not a codec: it's a file format. You
can stick just about any codec inside an AVI file, and you need to
have the specific codec to play things back.
