I'm using Eudora v6.2.4 on a 2.8ghz quad-core intel xeon Mac running
Leopard 10.5.4...

Question: If I were to create a new Attachments for Eudora to use for
all future incoming emails, would the older emails lose track of their
earlier attachments that were received into an earlier/different
Attachments folder?

I have tons of old attachments in the same folder I've been using for
years, but since transferring to a new machine and upgrading to Leopard
(tho' I'm sure these are the actual causes) many of my older emails no
longer seem linked to the attachments that they'd arrived with... So I
want to start a fresh folder for new/future emails and attachments, but
I don't want to risk further de-linking the remaining emails and their
respective attachments...

Anyone have any thoughts or experience with this sort of thing?

Many thanks,

jb

I have moved Eudora (along with everything else) from one machine to
another several times. They key thing seems to be the path to the
attachments.

I always kept the attachments in a folder with the same name, on a drive
of the same name (HD, in fact). They seemed to stay linked, but if I
moved any attachment again the link to that attachment was lost- as
opposed to new attachments where the link is updated when I move them.

I don't know if there is a way of reestablishing the link to an
attachment; I seem to remember it being discussed here, but never saw
any solution tha I could use.

I have found this part of Eudora somewhat troublesome.

In short, while ever you leave everything on the same disk without
moving it, Eudora will find the attachments.

If you ever copy (not "move") the Eudora folder to another disk, or even
elsewhere on the same disk, then Eudora will find most of the
attachments that are in the main Attachments folder. It will not find
any in any other folder, even subfolders of the Attachments folder. From
memory, it may also not find the correct file where there are several
attachments with the same name.

Cheers

I experience a fair amount of unexplained de-linking, so I share your
frustration. However, I have changed my attachment folder without a
large-scale delinking (just the usual, intermittent, unexplained
de-linking).

That's interesting. I get no delinking at at all, except when moving
attachments between machines, and even then if they are linked
initially, then they stay linked. I described earlier in this thread how
I have the same directory structure and names on the two machines...

You are probably using a more advanced setup than I am; Eudora 6.1.1, OS
10.4.11 and a 1.8GHz iMac G5.

Often I see the problem when people send me multiple copies of the same
attachment (or attachments with the same name). However, I've seen it
just randomly as well. I'm Eudora 6.2.4 and OS 10.5.4, MacBook Pro.
But I'm pretty sure the problem predates both Eudora and OS updates.

You should all consider going to the new Thunderbird-based Eudora,
Penelope, aka Eudora 8: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Penelope

It's being developed by the same people as did Eudora before. It's
available now as V. 8.00beta3.

I've been using it on both Mac OS (10.4.9-11) and Windows XP and Vista
since the beta1; I use it as my everyday email program. (And I didn't
use Thunderbird before; I don't like its interface.)

I find it quite stable.
