Post subject: Maybe the weirdest behavior ever
Archived from groups: opera>linux (more info?)

I have seen a lot of weird and annoying behaviors
from Opera when using it, but this one might top
them all. I don't expect anyone to duplicate this.

I observed this when I upgraded from 9.60 to 9.61.
When I started Opera again, I (of course) had a
new page open - http://portal.opera.com/upgrade/
(as always happens). I could barely read it since
it had some cursive (script font). So, I used the
plus key to make the page larger, and a very
strange thing happened. At (only) 120% the font
changed from the script font to the regular
(default - I have never changed any of the fonts)
font. Using the plus and minus keys, the page
displayed with the script font at every size -
except for 120%, where I would see the default
font. Then I noticed the script font in other
places - like the name of the mail folder I had
open.

I closed Opera and restarted it, and (fortunately)
haven't seen this since. Just one more way for
Opera to bug me. If this returns, I will write
more about it.

Yes, I can imagine that this could happen. Font support on linux is a
one of our big problems. The main problem is that we have no idea how
"good" a font is. Opera can't tell that a classic german gothic font
is absolutely unreadable to ordinary humans. We have started
implementing a solution to this problem, based on having a
configuration file that describes a set of well-known fonts so opera
will usually be able to pick a known-good font. I don't know how far
that project has gotten, though.

I've never run into squirrelly font behavior in an Opera upgrade, but I
have also noticed that fonts can be--er--variable on Linux. And a lot of
the open source fonts are, frankly, not all that great.

But I learned a trick for importing Windows *.TTF fonts into Linux which
have made my font configuration in Opera--and other Linux apps--much more
friendly.

The webpage that originally taught me how to do this is long gone, but
there is an updated version here:

http://brendan.sdf-eu.org/articles/antialiasing_slack.php

This works like a charm in Slackware. I ported probably 80% of my TTF
fonts to the computer on which I type right now (some didn't make it, but
all my favorites did--I copied the entire contents of the Windows font
folder to my memory stick, but not all the contents had *.TTF files).

I'm guessing that, with some adjustments, it should probably work in other
distros.
