Archived from groups: alt>os>linux>suse (more info?)

I am using 11.1 on an Acer Aspire One 150, and cannot find a way to get
users permissions for the USB DVD drive.

I have done "lsusb" to find the bus and devive numbers, and then, as
su, done "chmod a+rw /dev/bus/usb/004/005" where 004 is the bus number
and 005 the device number, as suggested here:

http://forums.opensuse.org/hardware/402857-scanner-permissions-again-o...-root-w

where someone had a scanner problem.

I can now see the USB drive in /media ok, but, even as root, I can't
change the permissions.

The specific problem I have, is that I want to use it in VirtualBox to do
an install of XP from an original disk. Of course, the Acer Aspire One
does not have a built-in DVD drive.

At the moment, I am running VirtualBox as root, and that has enabled me to
do an installation, but that will only ever be accessible to me as root.

So, I am satisfied the drive works, and can be found by VirtualBox ok.

Any ideas how to set the permissions for user please ?

Thanks

Paul

You could try adding that user to the 'cdrom' group (in Yast - Security
and Users - User and Group Management. At least that's where it is in
11.0, I haven't got around to installing 11.1 yet.)

Ulick, thanks for the suggestion. I had already done that, sorry I forgot
to mention it.
