Type:

rpm -q libstdc++

Unless they've changed the package names from rh7.3 to rh9 that should
tell you if you have it installed. If it says not installed locate the
libstdc++-some-version-numbers.rpm file on your cds and do rpm -i
[filname]

You probably need a version of libstdc++ that's not included with RH7.3.
AFAIK, libstdc++.so.5 is the C++ standard library for GCC 3.2/3.3. You
could try installing e.g. libstdc++-3.2 for RH 8, e.g. from here:
<URL:http://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=libstdc%2B%2B.so.5&submit=Search+...>
If the RH 8 RPM doesn't work, maybe some of the others in that list will.

If you install it with "rpm -ivh FILENAME" (where you substitute
FILENAME), it should install along with your existing libstdc++.

I personally find that a lot of libs lack part of the proper symlink
chain... Though perhaps they just haven't been replaced properly after
something else was removed, and took them with it.

I always check that first.
