Post subject: libpar-packer-perl and /usr/bin/par Archived from groups: linux>debian>maint>perl (more info?)

Hi folks,
as seen in #450915, there's a conflict between the par and
libpar-packer-perl packages for /usr/bin/par.
The par package clearly has a better claim to the name, so we should
name the script in libpar-packer-perl something different. Upstream
uses 'par.pl', but policy 10.4 says that we should leave the .pl out.
Historically, the script used to be in libpar-perl and called 'par.pl',
ignoring the policy. The name only got changed to 'par' in Debian
recently, when the libpar-packer-perl was split from libpar-perl.
Any suggestions on a better name? Maybe 'par-packer' (although the beast
seems to do quite a bit more according to the manpage) ? Or should we
just stay with 'par.pl' since that's what we have in Etch?
I have prepared libpar-packer-perl/0.976-5 in the pkg-perl SVN repository,
with the script renamed to 'par.pl' for now, to solve #450915 in the
least invasive way. Would some DD please consider uploading this? It's
much better than the current situation in any case.
Cheers,

Urgs, no, IMHO being consistent with such stupid extensions is not important
at all.
Anyway, in this case it is the easiest method to avoid the conflict, so
I agree that this is the way to go. But - just for the record - I
strongly disagree with your reasoning.

I'd be inclined to call it par-archive, rather than par.pl, but it
probably doesn't matter a lot. The problem with par.pl is that the ".pl"
really adds no information about what this par is, and par is pretty
widely known as a formatting program. My first assumption would have been
that it was a reimplementation of par in Perl. par-archive makes it clear
that it's really about managing a particular archive format.

I agree on this, and par-archive sounds good. I'll rename the script
one more time unless somebody objects. Please Cc #451600 if you do.

what about perl-ar or perl-archive, as that's what par means, I think

The long description of the package seems to imply that the format is
called PAR, in analogy to JAR.

Yes, exactly. But jar is java archive, as tar is tape archive, hence
my suggestion.

There is some additional information added with the extension: There is
a binary PAR loader and a Perl script. Adding ".pl" to "par" makes it
clearer that it's the script. The binary is called "parl", however.
That being said, the naming isn't mine.
Now, renaming par.pl to something else (par-archive would be fine in
principle) is something that might break user's code. Simply renaming
the file certainly breaks even the PAR-Packer code since a copy of
par.pl is packaged into binary executables. So some patching would be
necessary there.
I'm not entirely sure what the implications of a rename may be for user
code. I am sending a copy of this mail to the PAR mailing list, so it
can be discussed.
Best regards,
Steffen
