Post subject: kernel upgrade fails - 2.6.8-3 seems to not be a valid kernel to bootx Archived from groups: linux>debian>ports>powerpc (more info?)

I've just tried to move from 2.4.27 to 2.6.8-3 on my powermac running
Sarge - it's a 6500/300 - I installed kernel-image-2.6.8-3-powerpc,
which placed in /boot a vmlinuz-2.6.8-3-powerpc and an
initrd.img-2.6.8-3-powerpc
copying those to the MacOS partition I run BootX on in order to boot
to the new kernel reveals that BootX doesn't recognise the
vmlinuz-2.6.8-3-powerpc file as a valid kernel to choose from. I
booted back into Linux (still under 2.4.27) and took a closer look at
this new 2.6.8 kernel. file gives me the following:
$ file vmlinuz-2.6.8-3-powerpc
vmlinuz-2.6.8-3-powerpc: executable (RISC System/6000 V3.1) or obj
module not stripped
copying the file to vmlinux-2.6.8-3-powerpc.gz then trying to gunzip
it also fails (I was told this should work).
Any ideas? is the current 2.6.8-3 powerpc kernel package broken,
instead putting a System/6000 executable where an ELF one should be?
Running file on the current kernel gives:
$ file vmlinux-2.4.27-powerpc
vmlinux-2.4.27-powerpc: ELF 32-bit MSB executable, PowerPC or cisco
4500, version 1 (SYSV), statically linked, not stripped
which looks more sane. I have a Mac 9500/180MP that has been running
fine with a 2.6.8 kernel for a while - its kernel isn't a vmlinuz
one, rather a vmlinux one - vmlinux-2.6.8-powerpc-smp kernel
identifies fine as an ELF executable just as my problematic machine's
(working) 2.4.27 kernel does.
Thanks,
Dana

For what it's worth, here is the kernel I have running on an up-to-
date "sarge" machine (PowerMac Blue&White G3 - NewWorld, but just
barely!).
$ file /boot/vmlinux-2.6.8-3-powerpc
/boot/vmlinux-2.6.8-3-powerpc: ELF 32-bit MSB executable, PowerPC or
cisco 4500, version 1 (SYSV), statically linked, not stripped
Hope it helps!

It does indeed - I just looked closer in /boot, and among all the
other files in there (yes, I should tidy is a vmlinux-2.6.8-3
kernel dated May 25th, as well as the vmlinuz-2.6.8-3 kernel dated
today. Could you do an ls -l on your boot and let me know what date's
on your vmlinux-2.6.8-3-powerpc ?
The vmlinux-2.6.8-3-powerpc seems to work well, but I'd like to know
it's a valid one, not yet another relic from me starting a kernel
upgrade and not copying everything over to BootX in order to actually
get it running
thanks,
Dana

The vmlinux-2.6.8-powerpc is the one that came off the Debain 3.1r0
install disk back in January. The more recent one is the update
installed by aptitude in April. I believe it to be the latest.
Enjoy!

The vmlinuz kernel is created on the fly by mkvmlinuz, but you can just as
well ignore it for your purpose. It is i believe the .coff kernel, which you
may be able to boot directly from the OF of your oldworld pmac, but nobody
tried this in ages.

This is indeed the one used by quik or bootx, and even miboot, so this is the
one you need.

This makes me believe that Dana replied something funny to the mkvmlinuz
question. It should have defaulted to quik or something, i will have to try
that on occasion.

Ahh - that might be it. I *did* try to get quik up and running on
this machine when I first installed it, but that failed and I
reverted to BootX - which I'm happy with. I really don't know exactly
what I played with back then - now with this new kernel I only looked
at the files by date & picked the vmlinuz one.
After seeing Rick's response with the same date (25th May 10:55am my
timezone) and md5 sum as mine - manually downloading the
current .deb direct from p.d.o and finding the same kernel there
verified it's as up to date as it gets, and all's well
