I am a Linux newbie who knows just enough to get myself into trouble...
I had my machine seamlessly connecting to the wireless network from
Ubuntu 8.04, and now very, very intermittently from 8.10. Don't have any
idea why - it takes forever to connect now, and multiple tries.
The problem isn't with the ISP. The same laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad T61) has
no problem connecting using Windows XP, and everything worked fine in
8.04. There's something about 8.10 that doesn't like my wireless network
- or vice-versa.
I've appended my hardware setup below. Can anyone out there help?

You have an Atheros based wireless card. Which driver are you using,
madwifi or ath5k? The ath5k driver is new and tends to connect at
slower speeds than madwifi. It's also undergoing development, so the
latest version may be better.
ls /sys/class/net
ath0 is madwifi, wlan0 is ath5k.

I don't know how to tell what driver I'm using. Do I use the ls
/sys/class/net to find out? I'll switch over to Linux and give that a
try. |

Just in case you weren't aware of it, there is an Ubuntu newsgroup:

ath0 eth0 lo pan0 wifi0
So it looks like madwifi. It does eventually connect, most of the time.
It usually has to try and re-try several times though, which is time
consuming and annoying. |

That's wierd, I use madwifi and it connects almost immediately. The
only problem I've had is with a weak signal in airports. That's why I
thought perhaps you'd switched to ath5k.
I'd suggest you find an Ubuntu group and see if others are having the
same problem as Atheros wifi adapters are fairly common.

Thanks for your comments. The Ubuntu group suggested I come /here/. I
guess I'll keep plugging away at it.
I am, however, wishing I hadn't 'upgraded' to 8.10. Not only is it less
useful (since my connections to the internet are suddenly unreliable), I
find the UI effects kind of strange... |

Found a solution, I think. Apparently, the driver is not reliable. I
don't know if this is an upgrade or if I'm reverting back to an older
version. I need to reboot to confirm that it works consistently, but
assuming it does, this is a big relief.
Here's where I got the fix:

That's interesting, apparently Ubuntu has managed to screw-up the
madwifi driver.

I am aware. Of course, they sent me here...
I did find a solution, finally (it's elsewhere in the thread). |
