I just installed Slackware 9.1 and everything appears to
be working well except the sound. I have a Soundblaser
Live soundcard. After first installing I ran 'alsamixer'
and moved the two volume controls on the left to the
maximum position. I then ran 'alsactl store'. I'm not
certain that what I did was correct or adequate.

Any assistance on this would be appreciated.

You need to unmute the mixer and volume controls. 'm'

I'm sorry but I don't understand how to accomplish what you
suggest. Haven't done much with Linux yet.

Run alsamixer again. If there are "MM" over some volume controls, it means
the channels are muted. You have to unmute them pressing m to hear
anything on those channels. Try playing some music with xmms (or other
music player) and updating alsamixer simultaneously.

Unmuted the chanals as instructed above and ran 'alsactl store' but no luck
(tried playing an mp3 file). I also have Womdpws XP installed on my
machine and the sound works fine there so I know the problem is not with
the soundcard. Any other suggestions?

Mate

With alsamixer there are two steps after firing up alsamixer.

You have done step 1 already ...that is set the volume level of
each desired channel.

The second step is to unmute or turn on each of the channels that
you have selected. This is done by pressing the 'm' key on your
keyboard for each of your desired channels.

Cheers
