| How difficult would it be to tweak Slackware64 to run on
Itanium2? I have access to a few Itanium2 boxes and would rather run
Slackware on them instead of Red Hat or Debain.

Almost the same amount of work as went into creating Slackware64 itself.
Everything, from the kernel, through the C-libraries to all of the
applications will have to be recompiled (from the 32-bit sources),
as the Itanium is a totally different 64-bits architecture (actually
"more 64-bits") then the AMD-64 cq Intel EM64T technology.
And the Itanium isn't even capable of running AMD-64 programs, although
it can (through hardware-supported emulation) run 32-bit Pentium (i586
and above) programs.

You'll have to recompile everything for that platform. Itanium != x86_64.
In other words, there's no way to "tweak" the distro to do this. It's
as complicated as targeting a whole nother platform (which is exactly
what it is).

There are RISC (Reduced_Intructions_Set_Computers) and CISC
(Complex_Instructions_Set_Computers)processors. Intel, AMD and others are
CISC processors and Itanium like Alpha processors made by DEC (Digital
Equipment Corporation) in the past are RISC processors. So indeed, you have
to wait a while for the engineers (or Guru's) globally, have time to make
Slackware Ready for these kind of Computers, made for RISC applications.
B.T.W there are a lot of information RISC v.s CISC on the net. |
