Post subject: Problems installing Fedora Core 3
Archived from groups: linux>redhat>install, others (more info?)

I've got a laptop with 1/2 Gb memory and 20 Gb hard disk. Can boot from
a CD but doesn't have a floppy drive.
Partitions physically in the 'right' order:
hda1 4-5 Gb, formatted as ext2 and migrated to ext3 by installation
hda2 vfat partition
hda3 1/2 Gb, swap
Immediately after installing Fedora Core, Workstation without
modifications, grub on hda, trying to start the system, I saw some error
messages:

--------------------------------------------
VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem).
Red Hat nash version 3.5.14 starting
Mounting /proc filesystem
Creating block devices
Creating root device
mkrootdev: label Fedora not found
Mounting root filesystem
mount: missing mount point
pivotroot: pivot_root(/sysroot,/sysroot/initrd) failed: 2
umount /initrd/proc failed: 2
Freeing unused kernel memory: 136k freed
Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.
--------------------------------------------

Is the space in the label "Fedora Linux" a problem? Anyway, I changed
the kernel line in grub.conf by specifying "root=(hd0,1)"; now I get:

--------------------------------------------
VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem).
Red Hat nash version 3.5.14 starting
Mounting /proc filesystem
Creating block devices
Creating root device
Mounting root filesystem
mount: missing mount point
pivotroot: pivot_root(/sysroot,/sysroot/initrd) failed: 2
umount /initrd/proc failed: 2
Freeing unused kernel memory: 136k freed
Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.
--------------------------------------------

I checked, /sbin/init is there, even tried adding "init=/sbin/init" to
kernel, but nothing changed. I don't think that's a problem, I have a
feeling that root hasn't been mounted properly. Help!

Thanks in advance

Tom

Scrap it and use FC5. It's way more laptop friendly.

Looks like you need to fix up your partition labels so they match those
used in /etc/fstab. You can use e2label to read and set partition labels.
