Just downloaded and looked at the latest from PCLinuxOS

http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=05221

For testing purposes only. Will not be upgradeable. Do not use as a
production install.

Looks good and is "fast."

Two things to keep working on though, make that three.

The installer locked after writing the Bootloader, however the install was
complete and I could reboot into the partition.  Upon reboot, I was asked
for the root password and user.  Provided and worked well.

Compiz does not seem to work.  It is installed but I cannot get the 3D to
work

Autologon still needs work.

On the plus:

Printer and scanner setup were a snap and it installed my wireless (Ubuntu
will not) card with no problems.

I noticed a few changes from PCLOS 2007, aside from the kernel update:

fstab lists only the active partitions, rather than all. The install
checks all partitions and offers a choice. The default includes
separate /home and / partitions, but can be overridden.

I have a set-up with 4 Windows partitions, / and /home for four Linux
systems as well as a separate boot and swap partition, a total of 14 on
two drives. I normally use KDiskFree to mount other partitions, but it
relies on fstab entries and shows only the ones used for this install.

CUPS wasn't started at boot. Easily fixed.

You no longer need to edit .fonts.config to get font "hinting".

I put GRUB into the "/" partition loader, and used my common "boot"
partition with no problems. Chainloading also works.

My on-board S-3 graphics won't handle compiz. Sad

No problems here! Set it up from KControlCenter.

Setting up Epson on CUPS list was easy. Adding my Brother DCP-110C took
some doing, as it did with all PCLOS releases to date.

You could have shared /home amongst all the Linux systems, which would save having to keep moving user files between them.

Have you ever tried this?

The "/home" folder contains much more than folders and files for each
user. These other files are quite different for each distro, even for
different versions of the same distro.

There are ways of sharing user files among distros, and even things like
browser bookmarks, but they do *not* involve a common "/home" partition!

There are even disadvantages with sharing swap across several distros,
but I assume you are aware of these.
