I might be wrong, but with 8.01 if I

a) opera &

b) Opera comes up.

c) opera &

d) A second instance (window) of Opera appears. Hmmmm?

e) I don't remenber this occurring in previous versions.

f) No big deal -- I just blow off the second (2nd) instance of Opera.

Must be a feature...

Look at the Windows panel. If both windows are listed in the panel, then
it is a single instance but multiple windows - which is what I get.

If you actually were to open a second instance (such as using the
-personaldir option), then the one instance of Opera will not be aware of
what pages and windows are open in the other.

This is a change from the 20050509.5 version of Opera. With 20050615.5
I get two instances, two windows, two processes.

Yes.

When I start the 2nd Opera, it says:

~% opera &
[1] 7987
~% opera: Activated running instance

I don't want two (2) windows -- never got them with previous versions.

You get two windows, but are they both listed in the Windows panel? Press
Ctrl-0 (number 0, not letter o) and see.
