On startup the audio fails, no start up sound and an error message
saying the audio doesn't work and using default. Both my 64 bit laptop
and 32 bit desktop have the same problem. yet you go to hardware in yast
and 'play test sound' works fine. Just can't play startup sound whatever
that is. Haven't found where to configure that yet. Enable desktop
effects just turns my screen white and I have to restart KDE.

try installing phonon-backend-xine (using yast) then reboot.
worked for me.

Why would you reboot? Is there a kernel change involved? Actually, I know
the answer to that but I'm just curious why someone would reboot after
installing a sound back end?

Probably because that "worked for him". |

Very amusing, I'm sure, but after further testing I have found that it doesn't work completely.
I still get no sound from QT3 applications running under KDE4.1, for instance I don't get audio notifications of email messages, even though they are enabled in Mail and also in systemsettings.
Perhaps you could use your wit and superior knowledge to explain how to enable this.

I often do it because I am too lazy to look what command I need to run
to activate or deactivate whatever isn't or is running. Or sometimes just
for the fun of it.
Typing rc[tab][tab], looking for whatever it might be, doing the
rcwhatever restart, checking if all is well.
It is much easier to just to type `reboot` in xterm, which is open
anyways.

My response was not supposed to be ironic or anything.
Anyway, the way I solved all my audio issues is not something I would
recommend others to do; it's quite a bit of work. I compiled my own
kernel with audio support (ALSA) completely disabled, installed Open
Sound System 4 (http://www.opensound.com), and I have set-up all
applications to use the OSS interface of /dev/dsp directly without any
arts/ESD/phonon/whatever stuff in-between.
That's my "wit and superior knowledge" at work here, I guess |

Just for curiosity: Assume the sound works normally with normal setup,
what would be the gain if it's done the way you did?
Does one get more out of it that way?
Why I'm asking is that I'm going to put together a new machine and it's
going to have 7.1 sound integrated on the MOBO. (Igues they all do?)
I'm listening to Mp3 most of the time so I assume not much can be done,
or needs to be, I'm cool with that.
Just like to know

I resolved mine by going back to KDE 3.5.9. Much easier than your method.
