I have an Astra 1200S scanner connected to my Linux box via a SCSI
interface. I use the dmx3191d SCSI module for such purpose.
This setup works, but has an impact on the system clock. When I am
scanning the system clock stops. It keeps going once the scan is done. In
fact, while scanning something my system becomes completely frozen. This
looks, to my inexpert eyes, like some sort of hardware issue. Anybody can
suggest anything?
The Linux box is not a SCSI one; the SCSI board came with the scanner.
I had to install it and recompile the kernel with SCSI generic support and
DMX3191 support. I wonder if there is something I can do, when configuring
the kernel, to get around this problem? The kernel is version 2.4.20. |

I happen to have an Astra 1200S, but I haven't used it with Linux. What
I do remember about using it under Windows was that once you started a scan,
the system was *completely* unusable/unresponsive until the scan was done,
even with a decently fast processer. I ditched the cheap SCSI card that
came with the scanner, and hooked it up to an Adpated card. Instantly,
scanning was a pleasure, you could continue on with your work during a scan
as if nothing else were happening.
So, my guess is that it's not the scanner's fault, it's the SCSI card's
fault. : )
