I'm about to buy a new laptop, the graphics options on the HPdv5t are the
Intel 4500MHD or the Nvidia 9200MGS. I've always used Nvidia but the
Intel driver is open source which is an advantage, the downside of the
Intel solution is that it uses shared memory.

Is there a noticeable difference in performance between the two if you
don't play games?

I use vanilla Gnome, I don't understand what the appeal of Compiz is
supposed to be, it's useless as far as I can tell.

The one thing that might drive me to the Nvidia is that gigabit ethernet
is listed as a feature with the Nvidia option. The HP site doesn't give
any info about ethernet in the base model, the drone on their live chat
line claimed that it was gigabit but Newegg lists it as 100Baset and I
tend to believe Newegg more than the live chat people. Does anyone know
if the base DV5T has gigabit or not?

I presume that any perception of difference in performance depends upon the
exact amount of available shared memory for the Intel graphics adapter and
your own choice of enabling or disabling certain eyecandy that requires
accelerated 3D graphics - e.g. Compiz/Beryl/kwin4.

Therefore, I believe that if you stick to one of the plain old KDE 3 (or KDE
4 with all 3D effects disabled) or Gnome, Enlightenment, WindowMaker, XFCE,
Fluxbox et al, you shouldn't be noticing any performance losses when using
the shared memory videoadapter over using one with dedicated video
memory. Smile

Hope this was helpful... Wink
