Hello,

I have installed XFCE, a Desktop Environment for Fedora 3.0, how can I
configure GDM to show it in the option list to choose from, when I log in?

Thanks, Daniel

Do you have the file:
/usr/share/gdm/BuiltInSessions/xfce.desktop
I believe that's what GDM is looking for at start.. if its not there, it
won't display the additional desktop manager...

The file contains the following:
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
# The names/descriptions should really be better
Name=Xfce Session
Comment=Use this session to run Xfce as your desktop environment
Exec=startxfce4
Icon=
Type=Application

Hello,

thanks for the hint, I put the file you suggested and also played
with a few scripts, now it works VERY FINE.
I have got an additional question, regarding Eterm 0.9, I think you
may also help me with this Wink. When I use it (Fedora 3.0) and start
Midnight Commander, the appearance of this file manager is very
funny - any suggestions?

Thanks again, Daniel.

Yes, some character gets displayed extremly strange. E.g: in mc the border lines
are displayed as a % sign ...
Did you ever encountered such a problem?
I thought first, perhaps Eterm uses another font. Tried with Arial, Terminal
font, but nothing changed:-(

Oh, sounds like you need to install ncurses? preferably the latest version
available... I was wondering, do you get any language variable errors?
something like "LC not set"? Will L G

Hello!

Thanx for your reply. ncurses is installed, so in a normal xterm mc runs well.
Here is a screen shot: http://members.a1.net/e0226781/mc_screen.jpg
Any suggestion is welcome!

Whoa, that looks like the wrong character set.... What you could do is this,
try downloading and compiling the latest version of midnight commander or
changing you default character set... Run this command:
$ cat /etc/sysconfig/i18n

and post what the file contains... I just want to check you default
settings...

That's a non-UTF-8 application running in a terminal that thinks it's
getting UTF-8, i.e., something that's using the Linux console (PC-clone)
upper-128 codes for line-drawing. In UTF-8 those become something
entirely different.

Ok. Here is the contents of this file:
LANG="de_DE.UTF-8"
SUPPORTED="de_DE.UTF-8:de_DE:de"

Hi!

I experienced with setfont, and setting the font directly used by Eterm
but none of them changed the situation. Here is the summary:

setfont in Eterm (under X11): putfont: PIO_FONT: The argument is invalid
setfont drdos8x14 (NOT under X11): ok. Changed the console-font, and mc
worked as well
Eterm -F "an X11 font (located in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts)": changed
the font in Eterm and in mc as well, but mc didn't like it
gdm: this invokes /bin/unicode_start (a script, that is invoked at
startup, and changes the console-font using setfont), but under X11 this
hasn't any effect

My question is: if i change the console-font to e.g. drdos8x14, and
start X11, why doesn't change this the font in Eterm or in xterm
(unicode_start was modified of course, to make its job correct, if gdm
invokes it)?

Thanx Daniel!

The console font is completely unrelated to the X font.

In principle, one may construct a program that shares this information,
but I don't recall any instances. It wouldn't be portable (work on any
other system than Linux) anyway.

Note also that the locale setting in your shell is independent of the
UTF-8 mode for the console. (Actually this is true also of xterm - one
may configure various combinations with the locale vs the font vs the
encoding).

You can make it work by running Eterm from a shell script that overrides
the system locale, e.g., to POSIX. I'd seen a few comments regarding this,
but google (eterm utf-Cool found this:
