Hello,
Hmmm... I don't know how to explain this but Opera is not viewable in
the Window Manager (I use Enlightenment).
I had an Opera (9.50) session running and then changed the theme of the
WM. Opera then disappeared. Since I could not stop it manually, I
killed the opera process and restarted it. It starts fine but I don't
have a "GUI", I only see the process when running a "ps -ef". Then I
rebooted... no difference, process runs but no "GUI".
Ok... I thought I'd update to 9.51. I still have the same problem. All
other programs run without any problems... and I can see them.
Any ideas here?

Not much. Do you use the shared ore the static opera.deb?
Did it work with 9.27. Maybe you should give the static one a try...

Hello,
Thanks for the reply. It worked with 9.27.. in fact, I've never had a
problem with the browser before. I downloaded the "default" one that
was offered from the Opera website. According to aptitude it's
opera-static. Where can I get the shared one? I couldn't find it...

I just tried running it as root... the browser runs fine that way.
Could there be some strange permissions problem going on? I installed
the .deb package using "dpkg -i" (which I have always done) and never
had the problem before... I'm baffled... |

Hmmm.. I deinstalled opera (dpkg -r opera) and then reinstalled Opera
9.50. It works fine now. Possibly a bug in the deb package of 9.51?

9.51 installed OK for me on Ubuntu. However, I always leave the old
configuration files when upgrading. I presume /.opera is in your home
folder?

ftp://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/linux/951/final/en/i386/shared
You could also put 'http://deb.opera.com/opera/ etch non-free' into your
/etc/apt/sources.list, then you have the choice between shared and
static with aptitude. The shared package is just named opera and the
other one opera-static.

Those are normal error messages, as the bash script /usr/bin/opera still
tries to load a very old version of java, prior to actually starting opera.

Any chance you've put a file called opera in ~/bin ?
As the regular user, try running, at the command line, "bash -x -v /usr/bin/opera".

Ok. Definitely getting the right version. Try running

I get the same, followed by messages about the plugins, then the gui.
Have you killed all running opera processes?

Could still be some orphaned threads, that should show with "ps -eLf|grep opera"
Can't hurt to try running "killall opera". It should return
"opera:no process killed"
I'm running out ideas. Only things I can think of trying, would be a reboot
which should not make any difference, but can't hurt to try, or perhaps trying
out the newest beta version, 9.52 build 2065 from

Perhaps there's a corrupted file in ~/.opera. Try running "opera -pd ~/testopera".

Well, I thought that solved my problem. It worked fine the last 10
days. I just tried to running it and now the GUI doesn't appear
anymore. The process is running and I've made no configuration changes
since then. Actually, it worked this morning and this evening it does
not. There are no entries in any of the logs... Anybody have any idea?
