Post subject: A Day With Windows 7 RC1.....No Thanks....
Archived from groups: comp>os>linux>advocacy (more info?)

I weakened.....
Downloaded Windows 7 RC1, installed etc.

First the good:

1. Recognized my dual LCD system on a Quadra 450 Nvidia.
Different display models, different rez and refresh etc.
Set up perfectly.

Linux dies on this one.

2. Upgrade to Nvidia driver worked fine.

Linux is a PITA with this one due to permissions problems.

3. Didn't screw up my native XP installation.

Linux is ok on this with intelligent decisions on the part of
the user.

4. Seems to work.

Linux more or less works with my hardware.

Now the bad:

1. HP printer P1006 will not work.
The Solve it assistant goes to the correct website (more than
Linux could muster, wrong website), downloads the correct driver
but when I go to install it hangs when it asks me to plug in the
USB cable.

Linux it depends on the distro.
Some work fine others do not.
All can be made to work however.
I could not make Windows 7 work.

2. Midiman Delta1010 driver required some hoop jumping to get to
work. Had to run in Vista compatibility mode (are they kidding?)
to get it to function. They do work fine though.

Linux works fine with this card.

3. Sometimes hangs on shutdown.

Never had a problem with Linux.

4. Sliders for Nvidia color/brightness/hue etc do not do
anything either real time or after apply.

Never had a problem with Linux other than unable to save the
settings as a user.

Ok, granted the above drivers except Nvidia are Vista 32 drivers
and not official Windows 7 drivers so that may be the reason.

For me it doesn't matter because I'm not buying new hardware
just for the joy of running Windows 7.

Alright I know this is still beta software but honestly?
It looks like Windows Vista!!

On a Q9400 with 4G very fast ram and 7200RPM Seagate 1TB drives
with 32MB cache, the system was still slower than XP.
Not by much, but noticeable.
Hopefully this is just debugging code.

Honestly?

Unless this gets better, in terms of hardware support for me,
I'm gonna milk XP till the cows come home and then I'm buying a
Mac.
In fact I just may buy a Mac anyway.

One last thing, it's kind of funny but Windows 7 looks a lot
like a typical Linux system!!
The control panel, "My Computer", X-Ray Windows etc, look like
typical Mandriva etc....
Some of the themes are very nice though.
Interesting.

Transplanting doesn't work.

Linux is better.

Windows 7 - if your time has no value........
Good luck with that Mac.

It's repackaged, rebranded Vista. It really, really is.

I really can't say, because I haven't tried it - though of course I may do
someday.
The impression that I get though (over the past few years) is that the
successor to XP was delayed by far more than MS could ever afford to admit,
and that what we are seeing with the impending release of W7 is still not
what they were working towards (many features dropped) but nevertheless
closer to what they would have liked Vista to be.

In short, I get the impression that Vista was a stop-gap, just as ME was.
Certainly I get the impression that the only people to have adopted Vista
are those who were force-fed with it (Joe Public) and didn't have the
option to revert to XP.

It will be interesting to see how W7 fares.

Kinda funny that OS X, the OS that is known for being flashy, has less
useless eye-candy than either Windows or Ubuntu. There is some, such as the
"puddle" effect for widgets, but it is relatively minor on OS X.

Given how Vista was marketed compared to how ME was marketed, I don't
think it was a "stop-gap".

OSX has plenty of eyecandy. It has the cube, it has the minimize
animations. It has the fading stuff. It has expo.

Not that I care. It sure does look nice, but I can't stand waiting 300
ms. for a window to pop up. On Windows I use total commander a lot to
browse through log files, and that silly fade-in effect slows this
down a lot. I usually turn all that stuff off, and use the classic w2k
like skin. For me, that's the only way to make Vista at least a little
resposive.

The minimize is there for a reason - shows people where a window goes when
minimized. Does it well. Exposé, same idea: does what it does for a
reason. Fading stuff? The cube? Not sure what you mean. Even Time
Machine, though, which is a bit over done by some tastes, is there for the
purpose of setting up a metaphor and for usability reasons.

The transparent menu. No. That is just silly.

You can turn off / change the minimize behavior on OS X - and some of the
other behaviors. Some you need a tool like TinkerTool.
