Archived from groups: alt>os>linux (more info?)

Installed PCLinuxOS.

Tried to Update through Synaptic Manager.

Followed the steps as suggested in walkthrough.

But failed to connect to any of the file.

My net connection is OK as I can log on through konqurer and Ktorrent is
also working.

But I cannot access the web through Firefox or update.

I have cheked the CD and found it to be OK.

I think something is wrong with my settings.

This is because when I am using ubuntu live CD Firefox and update for
ubuntu works but when I am using Knoppix and PCLinux FF does not work but
Konqurer works.

I have tried changing the settings of FF to that of ubuntu but still it
does not work.

I have thought of completly switching to Linus but because of this
problem
I cannot do it.

I am a newbie and this is my first time for trying out Linux.

Your guidance will be of great help to me.

Thanks,

I am going to assume nothing

You clicked on the Synaptic icon (or opened Synaptic from the menu "Kmenu,
System, Configuration, Packinging, Synaptic)on the tool bar, entered your
root password and were not connected to the repositories, is what I hear
you saying.

If that is correct - I am dead in the water.

If on the other hand, you have gotten there and cannot access any of the
files listed there in, you are in good shape.  When you click on the box to
the right of the file name, a menu will pop open asking if you want to
install.  Click on install and, when you have finished all your selections,
click on the Green Arrow (Apply) icon on the bar at the top of the window.
It will then do its thing and, when finished, all of your new files will be
installed and, for the most part, listed in your menu.

No idea what "failed to connect to any of the file" means. Tell us exactly
what you did, what the error messages were and what the results of your
attempt were.

"I can log on through konqueror" means what? Log on to what?

Again, exactly what are the symptoms.

Yes. probably.

You have two different distros installed? Why not use the one that works?

BOth Ubuntu and PCLinux are Linux (I assume you mean).

>I am a newbie and this is my first time for trying out Linux.

You are a newbie and are installing two different versions?

>Your guidance will be of great help to me.

First switch off all firewalls.

Open a terminal window. (kterminal, gnome-terminal, whatever)
Test your network--
ping 142.103.234.23
do you get a response.
Then do
ping theory.physics.ubc.ca
Do you get a response?

If you do, your network is fine. Both the network itself and your DNS.
If you get a response to the first but not the second, post your
/etc/resolv.conf
file here.

If you get no response to the first, post the output of
ifconfig
here

First, is this a desktop or notebook computer? If a notebook, which
one? Wired or wireless ethernet? Or dialup?

In a PCLinuxOS terminal, type the following commands and post the output
here:

/sbin/ifconfig
/sbin/iwconfig

Do the same with Ubuntu.

I tried to update with synaptic.
Got the following message:
Could not download all repository indexes

The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted
because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed
index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your
network connection and the correct writing of the repository address in the
preferences.

The following problems were found on your system:

W: Release files for some repositories could not be retrieved or
authenticated. Such repositories are being ignored.

Being a newbie I tried the live cd's.
knoppix and ubuntu were tried live and only pclinuxos was installed.

As stated above only pclinuxos was installed.

pinging 142.103.234.23 got the following:
--- 142.103.234.23 ping statistics ---
72 packets transmitted, 71 received, 1% packet loss, time 71085ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 336.671/341.145/350.531/3.659 ms

ping theory.physics.ubc.ca
got
64 bytes from info.physics.ubc.ca (142.103.234.23): icmp_seq=429 ttl=44
time=337 ms
which went on and on.

For the benefit of others as well as yourself, I shall start back at
the beginning, but in fact you seem to be nearly there ...

Generally, you need to establish answers to the following questions in
order:

1) Is the network configured correctly? This can be answered quickly
by:

ping 127.0.0.1

If no response is obtained, you either have a hardware problem, the
network drivers need to be started manually, and/or you will most
probably have to investigate ifconfig via the manual.

2) Can you connect to your router?

ping <router's IP>

Or can you see its configuration pages in your browser by specifying
its IP?

If not, check that the network cable is plugged in properly, and/or
try swapping it with another. Check that IP settings in ifconfig
either configure the hardware to accept an IP via DHCP (preferred) or
at least are configuring an address in the correct range for your
router. (Commonly 192.168.0.x, but some come preconfigured with
default addresses in the 10.x.x.x range.

3) Can you connect to the outside world?

ping <your ISP's server IP>

or

ping 212.58.224.138 (the BBC)

If not, check your router settings against your ISP's requirements, of
course checking the ID and password being used are correct. Check
that your ISP is not having hardware problems.

You seem to have got this far.

4) Can you connect using DNS?

ping bbc.co.uk

If not, you have a DNS problem. Your ISP should be able to tell you
what settings you need to apply.

DNS problems most frequently occur when PCs have fixed IP addresses,
rather than collecting them via DHCP, which is why the latter is
preferred. Although, as I understand it, it is theoretically possible
to have a fixed IP but dynamic DNS, or the other way around, I have
never actually encountered this in practice. Always or nearly always,
when you specify the IP, you also have to specify the DNS server(s),
but if you collect an IP via DHCP, then the DNS will be collected as
well.

You may also have to configure your router to act as a go-between for
DNS from your ISP. Terminology varies in router settings, but look
for something like enabling DNS Relay. This will cause the router to
pass DNS information between your ISP and your local network.

But I've just recalled that the Live CD worked, so the last para must
already be taken care of.
