Post subject: Bug#178712: tetex-bin: mktexpk handles ttf fonts with gsftopk, which breaks on CJK
Archived from groups: linux>debian>bugs>dist, others (more info?)

I used an incorrect Subject: line when using my newsreader pan.
Let's stick to Emacs-CVS and Mew. Very Happy

Hi Chung-chieh

The official cjk-latex package has some Chinese fonts misconfigured.
The reason is that arphic.map correctly points to bsmi00lp.ttf, which
is installed by the ttf-arphic package. But if you use "latex"
instead, it will use PK fonts that are defined somewhere else, in .fd
files more precisely. They point for example to "bsmilp", but in fact
there are no bsmilp??.tfm files installed; it's been renamed to
bsmi??.tfm on Debian.

You can either choose to manually edit the .fd (font definition) files
in /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/CJK/Bg5/ (or rename/recreate the TFM
font files) or you could try out my updated cjk-latex packages
(renamed to latex-cjk-*, but there is a dummy package provided for
smooth transition) which you can apt-get at
deb http://chinese.alioth.debian.org latex-cjk/
deb-src http://chinese.alioth.debian.org latex-cjk/

for i386 builds and the source, or at
deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main contrib non-free

I was able read your DVI file without problems. If you want to use
pdflatex using the TTF fonts directly, you should modify pdftex.cfg.,
etc. You know the drill. Wink

pdf(la)tex will work with or without the addition of arphic.map.
If you add it, pdf(la)tex will use the TrueType fonts directly, while
if you just leave it, it will use the PFB fonts. I'm not aware of any
major differences in quality, but it could be my eyes. 8~D

Or you can just "latex" your file and use dvipdfm. I have found out
that the resulting sizes of the PDF files are usually smaller when
compared to pdflatex.
You can get an example of this at

HTH your problem with gsftopk.
