Hi all,

Just reading the thread about the East India Company beta made me wonder
what is people's favourite trading game (i.e. a game where establishing
trade routes forms most if not all of the game). Candidates I can think of
are:

Trade Empires
Imperialism I & II
Colonisation (old and new and Freecol)
Patrician I-III (though IIRC Patrician III is just a repackage of Patrician
II plus its expansion)
Anno 1503, 1602, 1701
Machiavelli The Prince
Port Royale

I'm leaving out the sci-fi/space-sim trading games to keep the list
manageable. Any others I've missed?

My favourite of those above are the Imperialism games, followed by Freecol -
but I don't own the last two. I'm conscious that missing Machiavelli was one
of my big gaming errors of the last twenty years.

Anyone else?

Yup. It was about pirates, and as tongue in cheeck as the first one. Much
like being the governor of Monkey Island Surprised)

Here is my D-fend config file for Merchant Prince:
D-fend 2.0 I think, it's a front end for dosbox and this profile mostly
works, except sometimes the game loses control of the cursor and that's
a gamebreaker. D-fend has managed to create dosbox configurations for me
on a few occasions where I myself failed miserably trying to get the
game up and running. Highly recommended.

===========================

As for '1830', I can't really comment. I did try the game at one time, I
know that much, but I never really spent much time with it. Don't know
how I came by it, I may have had it out on loan or something. As I seem
to remember it it's like Sid Meyer's Railroad Tycoon with a stockmarket
that I struggled to understand. Or am I getting my wires crossed here?

cheers, -Peter

Er - belay that. It's another Ascaron game so I'm prepared to bet it
will have exactly the same underlying engine, mechanisms and concepts as
Patrician (and it's predecessor 'Die Hanse').

First game w/trading I ever played on a pc was called
Incunabula. Very old, like 4 color monitor old. 1986, avalon hill.
Trading was done pretty much in the imperialism style. For its time
it was awesome, way ahead of its time, though there's no way I could
stomach it now I'm sure. Was amazing that they were able to get so
much out of one game considering how limited they were on computing
power at the time. It wasn't until imperialism that I had seen a game
that had this combo (I had missed out many games in between though as
I switched to board games rather than computer games for a long time
period.

did a quick search, some screenshots:

http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/incunabula/screenshots.

One thing incunabula had that later games did not - it had
alternative game modes. In one such mode, it was just about trading,
w/out all the normal TBS stuff from the normal mode.
