hi all.

"you know when it is time to move on when...."

I have a good one, to describe what I mean by the above, this happened
to me yesterday.

Last month I finally installed the game OUTCAST on my win98se system.
Installed good, but with my modern directx9, and the usual game bugs, I
knew there were Patches for this game.

I found that the site of Infogames had the version 3.0 patch, i wanted
to get it from them seeing they seem to be the modern 'caretakers" of
this old rpg classic.

I downloaded.
I placed this patch exe in a folder then clicked on it and the patch
install window comes up with first the language choice then a strange
message window follows, without any other options.
" do you wish to uninstall the selected components?"

seeing i have, of course, the cd for the game and no other option, I
clicked the yes and the exe did its thing.

it UNINSTALLED THE GAME!!

---now *there* is a patch for ya!!

Well, I will fire off a copy of this here message to infogames and see
what they say, but There Comes A Time To Move On, I guess........
[when things are *this* flackey, i wonder about all of the rest of this
game?!]

At least for this type of old game that is levels and levels behind my
operating system.

I wonder if some day the whole Genre of "computer games" will "time to
move on"?!!

Not for now, i see good games coming down the pike, but i suspect that
someday.......l

I recall something similar happening to me. I think you're
supposed to use the patch as an installer.

Yep, read the FAQ under 'Installation Problems':
http://www.atari.com/us/support/faq/outcast_pc.asp

"This was a problem found on the European version of the
game... The patch is an alternate installer that will prompt
you for the CD later"

No, the game itself was rock solid and great fun - is very
much worth playing if you can get it to run, even with the
low res graphics. Wink

According to my calculations the problem does not exist.

hey yes!!

it worked! oh how unitiitive, no wonder this game is quirky!

I dry ran it up untill the hero gets under my control.

he is a bit too too cynical and sarcastic for my tastes, i wonder if
the time he spends there will mellow him out and have him get less
sarcastic, like of Squall in FF 8?!
I do not like to rpg a character that is so negatively sarcastic!

anyway...I hope to get around to the game soon, thanks for info

well i am 64 years old and live in a senior Home, but I have met the 85
year old lady who was given a SNES console and she plays RPGs!! she
told me she loves games like
legend of mana and zelda and the like!!

but!
I agree, more and more on line and even in the consoles too.

EBs/gamestop does not even accept played computer games anymore, no
more Golden Oldies Finds! and few computer games compared to last
few years.

and even more computer games REQUIRE an internet connection just to
"validate" them!

[i do not have a phone, a phone costs $400+ a year and the internet
connection another
$250, that would be $600 to $700 a year, american money, just to have a
phone and i am not even in that much and i do not want to be disturbed
when i do am in!]

I am a strange mixture of the Old and the new, i have several console
systems and play rpgs, and I like the country quiet ways.

The problem is that so few companies seem to make real money out of it.
For every Baldurs Gate or Diablo there are twenty lame ducks that eat up
just as much development time and money.

So the games industry is turning to online games and selling by
instalments to try to maximise their return. Personally I love the
personal game, just me against the machine, no Internet connection and
no 50 other geeks trying to get in my way Smile

But I am an old codger and the industry does seem to be heading towards
an almost universal "online experience." I'm going to keep a few old
PC's around that will run Planescape and it's ilk, and spend my time
waxing lyrical about the "Golden Age of computer games." Smile

All that would change if they would do a proper job of listening to the
customers, not the noisey few, but a real cross section if those who
would like something good to buy.

Better that than all the "copy protection" malware we see.
