Post subject: How do I start Playing Empire...
Archived from groups: rec>games>empire (more info?)

Hi all,

Came acorss this newsgroup by accident...

I am into World Domination games and would like to know where I can play or
partake in Empire...

Didn't see any post indicating what type of game (PBeM, PBM, or Web) it was,
or where I can play it...

TIA

Hi, I am only going to give you some most basic info to get you
started, and I am sure someone more experienced than me will post with
more useful info in response to your post, so check again soon.

The site which you should visit for all kinds of information about
empire is http://www.wolfpackempire.com . You will find there all the
basic info to start playing. There is also information about new games
starting, but as far as I know not all the games are announced there,
so you should also check this newsgroup for game announcements. On the
wolfpack site you will also find links to the games which are
automatically restarting periodically, zebra and changeling blitz, and
I think changeling game is the best way to get familiar with the game
mechanics, but I strongly recommend that you should first read a little
bit on the wolfpack page. Another site which you might visit is :
http://www.angelfire.com/empire2/bungholio/empire_games.html
There are hints for new players how to organize the country during the
first few updates, and also some graphical record of a few the games
played in the past.

I have to go now, but I will try to write here again soon, and give you
the bare minimum info about the commands you should be familiar with
before you start playing, otherwise you might be a little confused at
first. In particular I will give you some hints (although from a
relatively inexperienced player) about how to organize your country, so
that it will relatively smoothly run during those hours when you are
not around. I will also start playing the Changeling game after the new
year's eve under the name of Sarmatia, so if you start playing there
(but not until the new year's eve, because the old changeling game will
be still running until sunday I think), use the "anno" command to ask
any questions, and I will frequently log in to the game and try to give
you answers to any questions as soon as possible. Hopefully a few more
experienced players might start their countries too, or at least login
as visitors to answer your questions when I take a break for the
night:) In the game I will also play my country in such a way, that you
will have a chance to practice attacking and defending. I hope that a
few other ppl will start their countries in changeling, even running
their countries very inefficiently and infrequently, because it would
give you the chance for even more practice. Anyone?Smile The command to
ask questions in the game, by the way, is "anno". The command to check
if there are any replies is "wire".

Before you do anything else, you need to get your empire client (either
compiled, or in the binary form), so the start for you would be
probably to try to get that client to work by connecting to the
changeling or zebra game currently running, and see if you can login.
If it doesnt work, post here about your problems and someone for sure
will try to help you.

Hope to see you in the changeling game (or another newbie game, if it
is announced soon).
And don't get too easily discouraged, because if you are looking for a
really challenging, addictive wargame, you just found it, and it is
worth all the effort to get started!!!

First commands to learn:

break (starts the country)

map # (to see how the country looks like)
nmap # (to see how it will look after update)

cens * (to see sectors' efficiency, population, mobility, etc)
reso * (to see sectors' resources - min = iron content, doesnt get
reduced when excavated,
gold and oil get reduced as they are produced)
comm * (to see commodities in the sector)

show ship build
show land build
show plane build (to see what can be produced at which level)

nation
budget
news
prod *
power (information)

tele
read
anno
wire (communication with other players)

des x,y z (to redesignate a sector - make sure you have at least 1
"c" sector - active capital)
x,y are sector's coordinates, z is new designation

move (to move commodities, iron, dust, civs, mils)
directions are specified as:

y u
g 0 j
b n

where 0 marks a current sector, to stop use "h".

--------------------------
Now remarks, try not to keep more than safe population in any sector
early on.
"nation" command tells you what the safe maximum is, "cens *" how many
civs you have in each sector.

Try not to move commodities (iron, dust) by hand, but setup the
distribution. Choose a sector for a warehouse ("w"), possibly with low
gold/iron content, e.g. 1,1
type:

des 1,1 w
dist * 1,1

Suppose now that you designated 2,0 as "m" (iron production):

des 2,0 m
thre i 2,0 1

The second line above means, that iron will be automatically
transferred from 2,0 to 1,1
during update (saves you mobility, because automatic distribution costs
a few times less
than moving goods by hand).

You also should specify where you want that iron transported. Say, you
designate 3,1 sector
a "j" (producing "lcm" from "iron"). Type this:

des 3,1 j
thre i 3,1 300
thre lcm 3,1 1

The second line means during each update 300 iron will be moved from
"w" to 3,1 .
The third line means, that all lcm (except 1) produced in 3,1 will be
moved to "w" sector
during update.

------
Thats all here, try to login to the changeling game and play with these
commands. After new years eve I will start a country there (Sarmatia)
and will be happy to help you get started. Check the power chart and
see if my country's name appears on the list. Then send me a "tele".
Alternatively, if you see more countries on the power chart, try using
"anno" to ask questions.
Happy New Year!

One correction (I was writing previous posts in a hurry, sorry) - the
best choice to get started for a completely new player in my opinion is
zebra, not changeling as I had said before. Changeling game has updates
every 10 minutes, zebra every 1 hour. 10 minutes may be too little time
before you get a hang of the basic commands. And zebra is the game
where you will be able to see my country this week to help you get
started.

Also, you don't need to compile the server in order to connect to the
game using a client, although you can compile the client either by
compiling everything in the package in 1 go (just edit the build.conf
file and set the host and port appropriately - for zebra it is port
5678 and host blitz.wolfpackempire.com ), or compiling the standalone
version of makefile in the src/client subdirectory. You can also
download and compile one of the more user friendly clients listed on
the wolfpack page, but in my opinion starting from a low level client
is better for a totally new player, just like manual transmission is
better from automatic to learn to drive.

What type of OS are you using?

There are some pre-compiled binaries available for the client on
www.sourceforge.net/empserver site to get you started.

If you are using Windows client, I would suggest either the
pre-compiled client
or WinACE. WinACE is graphical user interface. The pre-compiled
client is
text based interface. WinACE also has a copy of the info pages from
the game
where you can search for information. Sorry the index is not completed
yet.

There is also a getting starting guide in WinACE is also included in
the WinACE
help information.
