OK here's the deal, I'm not very good at Missile Command. I got one of
those teamplay Missile Command/Centipede/Millipede combo arcade units
a year or two back and even playing that I'm just terrible. If there's
a scoring strategy I'm not getting it. I mean, obviously keeping bases
and missiles for the bonus is a good idea, but by about the 7th wave
all bets are off and all I can do is just spam the heavens and hope to
have 1 city left.

To put it into perspective right now a friend of mine has knocked me
off the high score with a whopping 18,000. I'm sure that crazy Captain
Awesome guy could score higher than that using just his ear.

So any hints to at least break 20k oh MC masters? I recall being good
at the 2600 version, but I think that was on teddy bear Smile

Thanks! I understood the concept of the 'umbrella' but the alternating
the left and right silos and using the middle (faster) one for 'clean
up' seems to have been the piece I was missing. I'm still probably the
world's worst MC player, but I was able to top 18k and reclaim the
high score, so much thanks again!

There is the basic strategy of the spread. If you know this one already
then disregard this post. I start to use it on the second black background
red text screen. Basically each screen will have 3 waves. 2 normal attacks
and then random stuff and smart bombs. You use the left and right missile
silos to create a wall of defense that the majority of enemy fire will run
into. Then you use the center silo for the rest, usually smart bombs. Note
that sometimes a wave will start with the smart bomb attack so you don't want
to do a spread attack on those. How I do a spread is this. I'll start the
crosshairs on the left side of the screen and move it at an even speed to the
right hitting the right missile every inch or so. If you time it right every
thing will pretty much run right into the wall. Then the second wave hits
and i do the same thing with the left silo. Then pickoff the planes and
smart bombs with the faster center silo. Good luck!

For extra fun, change the DIP switches so all the words on the screen are in
Spanish, German, or French! Then invite your friends over. Smile

I always referred to it as "spread em'".

yes two spreads. and the middle silo for any ones you've missed.

Pretty straight forward, but does any body have any techniques for
hitting the damn smart bombs?? or is the only way a direct shot?

Referred to in C&VG as the "blanket blammo" method. The phrase has stuck in
my mind for years.
