Agreed, but IMHO only when you actually do spend some time
running around and farming herbs - just picking up what you
stumble across doesn't make you rich (ok, that may be
obvious).
> Mining: As above
Same here. Interesting that Mithril (skill requirement
somewhere between 180 and 200) sells for more than Thorium
on my current server. So it's - at least on my server -
a great midlevel (35-45) moneymaker.
> Skinning: Makes steady money, not a lot on my server
But fills a lot of bagspace, and there's tons of leather
on the AH.

Seconded.

Not exactly a money drain as lots of potions sell
for about what the raw ingredients cost. Obviously
makes it not a moneymaker neither.
> Enchanting: Cost me lots to skill up, small profit now, but best to just use
> to disenchant
For lazy buggers *dis*enchanting is a great gathering
profession, because you'll get so much soulbound stuff
(quest rewards, boss drops noone wants, stuff you've
outgrown) over those 60 levels.
Levelling it to 300 makes no sense, as you'll not get
money out of it unless you farm like mad for rare recipes,
and spend a lot of time selling them (except for special
situations like guild enchanters of course).
> Engineering: Great for pvp, can make a little profit out of thorium shells,

I took up engineering with my hunter at 40 and basically
financed it by making tons of target dummies and selling
the fused wiring. In my opinion, engineering is the only
profession I would take, because it's the only profession
that really gives you something you wouldn't have without
it. I can buy all the enchants I'll ever want for less money
than it would take me to level it. Same for tailoring,
leatherworking and blacksmithing.
Engineering doesn't only hold some nice and deadly
gadgets (deathray) and funny devices (world enlarger,
dragonlings), but it also has some items that actually
extend your classes utility, which is really unique to
engineering, because you can't use them without being
an engineer:
- Jumper cables XL which in about 75% of all cases can
resurrect a dead char (great for hunters/rogues who
can vanish/FD, saved my party from wipes multiple times)
- Teleporter (a second hearthstone, especially on the other
continent, is a gift)
- Repairbot (not necessary until you raid, but still: if
you're close before the end boss and just recovered from a
wipe, but your tank is naked because his gear is broken,
it's invaluable)
- Seaforium charges to blast locked doors (ever done a DM north
tribute run without a rogue?
Less important, but still handy:
- Parachute cloak (good for a few shortcuts)
- Deepdive helmet (ganked and corpsecamped all the time?
Play underwater!)
And it's relatively cheap to level.
> Blacksmithing: been a waste of time for me, money drain.
Seconded too.

It doesn't make you *rich*, but if you pick up herbs as you come across
them you won't have any troubles affording your mount at level 40. |

On my server at least, I've found enchanting to be extremely
profitable. However, it took a Long time to make it so. First I had to
get to 300. even with guildies sending me things to break down, it cost
me several hundred in mats to get there. Recipes another 200 or so.
>From there, I started on the Timbermaw grind for the agility weapon
enchants. Once I got those, the money really started coming in. Just
working for tips and telling people to bring their own mats, I usually
get about 5g an enchant. I made about 15g in 20 minutes just standing
by the AH. I don't announce my services on the trade channel. Just keep
my rods on me and eye the trade channel and answer whenever someone
asks for an enchant I can do and I happen to have a few minutes free
time. If people asks me the price, I tell them just mats. Tho I adore
tips, because shooting thongbears for the Timbermaw for a month is No
Fun.
I'd highly suggest getting the stat enchants. Everyone seems to do
glowing weapons, but the higher end stat enchants are rarer. The
recipes are usually expensive on the AH or a pain to grind rep for. So
competition is very light and the enchant is in high demand, people
actively requesting it on trade channel. I finished Timbermaw last
month and it's been very lucrative with hunters and rogues. Also well
appreciated by my guild - though it sucks up about 100g in mats to cast
one. I'm off now grinding with the Thorium Brotherhood now for an
equivalent weapon intellect enchant for the casters. Should be even
more lucrative as I never see them.

tailoring, as said earlier can be a good money maker if you know what to
make.
Plus, they are nice BOP items. It's ideal for an alt, as you're mailing him
all the cloth you find anyway.
My warlock has this awesome level33 BOP dress he's waiting to wear for
instance.
As for the bags, it really depends, but not being in a big guild, I'm making
bags for everyone, even small ones !
It is really great when you start alts or whatsoever.
And you can make money with strange stuff : wedding dresses, shirts, ...
the thing is, you shouldn't craft qith your main, not at the beginning.
That way, you can provide the mats easily and craft nice stuff, really.
And, crafting is fun ! |

I'm a leatherworker (mail) and I make money all the time with my
'crafting'. Some mats are mine, others are bought, but I always am in
the black in the end. Typical mats for a mail piece might be leather
(free for me), some thread and dragonscales. I might pay a few gold
for the scales, but most mail pieces sell for 10+G. |

Not all that interesting. Miners tend to end up with thorium coming out of
their ears, because they're always hunting for arcane crystals. *

on what planet are you living ?
Last time (and first) i saw a 16-slot bag drop, we all rolled need !
Even a many_days_played_at_60_char !
OK, 10 slots is small, but a 60 equipped with no 16-slots bags at all is not
rare at all !
If you're not in a guild which provides you of them, they are very expensive
on the ah anyway. |

All need, all greed -- same comes out in the end, so long as all party
members had the same chance during the roll. I still feel one level 60's
'need' for bags will not be greater than another level 60's 'need'. |

Yep I'm aware of that (of the BOP stuff, the set bonus and the LW
requirement are news to me, thanks). But it's quite an interesting
question if that is worth it - I mean those recipes require
components for 500+g, and still don't add anything to your
character but a few more stat points. I know that this is
important at 60, especially for people who do not raid, but I
honestly prefer the ability to resurrect once every 30 minutes
over an epic item.

I *think* they have been buffed in the past (don't ask me when).
Looking at some thottbot and allakhazam comments (yaya, talk about
serious sources) they used to break when resurrection failed before
a certain patch and had a much lower chance to actually work.
I've not much experience with the standard jumper cables, but the
Goblin Jumper Cables XL have worked about 60-75% in about the 20 times
I used them yet.
That's really a great thing, because as my hunter's on alliance side
and warlocks are rare there's not much else in our group in terms of
wipe recovery than me and the cables.
By the way: The XL cables can be used by gnomish engineers too,
but you need a goblin engineer to make them.
> I have, however, mostly used them on people who had already released
> their corpses. Does this make a difference?
No, I don't think so - I didn't pay attention but I definitely used
them on released bodies and they worked. My sample (about 20 tries)
isn't big enough to get any definitive conclusions, though.
> Handy, yes, but the same can be accomplished with a very cheap potion.
Might be, yes (I'm really stingy when it comes to consumables .
> Don't take engineering just for this
Nope, definitely not. For me the jumper cables and the teleporter were
the reason to go engineer - cloaking device, parachute cloak,
seaforium charges, deepdive helmet, mind control cap and thelikes
were just a bonus. And to be honest I didn't even bother with combat
stuff like deathray, shrink ray, nets and bombs.

When you're a miner you can get almost all materials up to about skill
level 200 within a few hours of farming. And even when you buy
everything in the AH it shouldn't exceed 150g (unless you want to level
it *NOW*, no matter what it costs, like I did with my warlock alt).
Just don't throw anything away because most stuff you create is a
component for a higher level recipe.

The question is rather "on what server are you playing". Loot rules
are server dependant. On my servers 16 slot bags are free for all
loot, everyone rolls greed. On some servers there are different
rules like "only one 'need' per instance" or "always pass on bop"
etc., which are perfectly accepted on those servers but seem
completely odd to outsiders.

I'm not talking about the rule, I'm talking about the "The notion that a
level SIXTY had not upgraded from 10 slots is absurd".
on my server, as it is the point, we all roll need on locked boxes for
exemple, or on rep items (argent dawn BOP for exemple) why not on bags ! |

Actually, it is absurd. If there is a level 60 running around with 10 slot
bags, they're a total moron. Also, they have no room for multiple sets of
gear, so they're worthless.
16 slot bags are not that uncommon, and go for maybe 20g apiece, if you
haven't gotten a few from drops already. And even in the weird situation
where you don't have any, 14 slotters are just a gold piece or two. *

right !
but then learn, just don't roll first, and ask "all greed" or "all need" on
the groupe channel before rolling.
Or wait to see what others roll. It is that simple. |
