I can't believe it! The fuser element on my HP LaserJet IIIP seems to be
failing. What a POS! It only lasted 16 years. :- )
Seriously, this sweet old printer... sniff... [sadness] is dead... or in
the opinion of our new "government death panel", is not worth the money to
fix.
Gotta buy a new one.
Advice pro and con welcome...

Dallas;
My printer requirements due to all the safety material I have to print
out is centered on a B&W Laser since I don't need color for documents.
I've tried several over time; at least 2 HP printers and 1 Samsung. I
had issues with all of them.
I'm now using a Brother HL5240 B&W Laser. It was inexpensive to buy
and I haven't had a single misprinted page in over a year now.
If you have to buy a printer, I highly recommend this one.

For home and light office use - go with the Brother - it's a solid machine.
If you use it for heavy work - new HP is the way to go.
For convenience of a copier & scanner - the all in one is attractive but
it's just an ok printer and is the highest cost per page of any print
solution.
For speed, longevity and cost - HP or Brother laser is the way to go. |

No sympathy here for you, Dally...16 years ago I was using a dot-matrix
printer.
But we have a Lexmark X4550 that is a wireless, printer, scanner, copier
that works great.

Don't know if your looking to stay with laser or not -
I have an HP Officejet All In One - that I bought back in late 2005, that
has served me well so far, for printing, copying, and scanning. It is an
inkjet, so not quite fast like a laserjet.
Mine is the 5610 model, but is dated and a better model out by now I am
sure...
But anyways, this is the first HP printer I have owned, and would not
hesitate to buy another HP printer should I find myself in the market for
one.

I hung on to this printer because it was a laser.. and I had a bias toward
laser because they made such nice prints compared to ink jets. Then since
2000(?) I suddenly couldn't tell the difference between laser and ink jet
prints.
I'm thinking there is no quality difference now??

I have an HP2605dn - networked, color, and duplex. I also have an Epson
Workforce 600 for scanning, copying, fax - NewEgg had them at a good price.

Dally,
I have used a lot of printers and so have my wife and son. The best by far
has been the HP All-in-one series. The software is fantastically good and
adabtable and the ink replacement cartridges (six of them) work out quite
reasonable, because you buy the colours separately only when you need. The
starter prices are also low, so I would recommend mine, C5180, with no
reservations. I guess there is a newer and better model now as mine is about
2 years old.

Does the IIIP fuser use a halogen lamp as the heater? I had the
fuser lamp on my now junked LJ4 go after about 6 years. The
lamp cost a fraction of the price of a complete fuser assy. My
LJ4 also lasted 16 years. When the second fuser lamp went,
I decided it was time for the power hog to go to recycling. |

We have an HP 932c and the only complaints I have are the cost of
ink....
about 60 dollars for 2, bw and color...which isnt bad about twice a
year...
Printers about 7 years old.

Yup.. sure does... but the lamp checks out 3 ohms on the left side and
209K+ on the right - perfect specs.
The Internet tells me the DC power supply board was made with a cheap PCB
material and over time the current leaks between traces. There is a
workaround which involves a soldering iron and making a new bypass.
(Kinda like what they did to Don's heart recently. :- )

Not much but there is a cost difference. I use the HP LaserJet for most
printing and the Epson Inkjet for specialty stuff, scanning, and
copying. My Boss did a calculation of what he spent on inkjet
cartridges and then bought the laserjet. HP III - I remember them!!!
How about the HP II?

Thanks everybody...
I just pulled the trigger on a HP Photosmart Premium C309a CC335A InkJet
MFC / All-In-One Color Printer from NewEgg.
Geez.. only $170.98 including shipping.. for a scanner, copier, fax,
automatic document feed, flat bed, wireless... on and on.... pretty
remarkable. The old LaserJet IIIp was over a grand in 1993.
(Yeah, I know.. it's the cartridges that'll kill ya)

I have a HP-4500 Color LaserJet with shipping carton (it's BIG)
purchased in 2000 for thousands of $$ that's been on craigslist
and hasn't sold for $400, even $350.
New multifunction units now sell for $171. )
