awesome, it will even become better than my port of Duke Nukem Forever
for ATARI 2600.

Do you want a demo??? It's only 10 Mbytes!!!

Yeah. Released by EA.

Crysis can wait. I'm still waiting for Doom and WoW for the 2600
first. Wink

about a video... lol

Never heard of "Crysis". It's not an arcade game at
least - that I know of. Crisis yes, but... are we talking

Meh, check his posting history, and you'll see that he's also posted
stuff claiming to be a cannibal and all sorts of inane things. This
is a dime-store troll, the kind that typically disappears as soon as
school resumes in January.

FAIL.

Are you referring to me? I posted the Doom thing as a joke, I know it
was a hoax.

Old news. Doom 2600 was done in 1997. Back then, this forum was very
active. There isn't enough lurkers to waste the bandwidth, and there
are enough of us who were participants in the greatest hoax of classic
video gaming to tell you to give it up. It won't work this time.

Not to mention that the 2600 emulator is only half a meg, and the entire
2600 library in image format would fit on two 3.5 inch HD floppies.

Don't worry, Pete. I give you far more credit than that... I was just
commenting on the fact that this attempt at trolling is even lamer
than usual.

Just making sure. The proximity of the Doom 2600 stuff to my comment
just had me wondering is all. Smile

I remember that Doom scandal. But hey... we've now got a
2600 Wolfenstein game! lol

Pete,

You are known, respected and liked around here. And for many of us, the
2600 Doom encounter is a fond memory.

But the OP of this thread is some yahoo calling itself stolen energy.
It's trying to steal the energy that still glows around 2600 doom, and
it can't do it in a way that is believable to even the most spaced out
of lurkers (except maybe one).

In addition, the troll in question is one who is known, not respected
and disliked. Again, Pete, no connection to you, kind sir.

Yes a peeCee game that when first released, no PC could run it at max
setting. Even today many "high end" PC sold at local B&M stores still
wave a white flag if you have Crysis DVD near the PC.

I am not sure how the 2600 would handle that. And it is much too
early for April Fool's like that Doom 2600 game or Molten Core for
World of Warcraft.

The thing is, Doom can be ported to the 2600. The stock hardware just
needs a bit of help.

Here's how I'd do it.

Start with the doom source code. Have it set up to render to a block of
memory, then after each frame is drawn, have code walk through that, and
re-scale down to the res that the 2600 could handle.

have that copied to a block of dual ported memory.

have code on the 2600 set up to do two things - read a block of memory, and
display it, and update a block of memory based on the controller settings.

That way, you'd wind up with a cart with a 386 (or later) processor in it,
some ram, some rom, that would really run the program, and use the code
running on teh 2600 to display it.

I'm in the middle of doing something similar to get arcade star wars and
tempest up and running on the vectrex, with a 68040 co-pro for the heavy
lifting, delivering a list of vectors to display to the original processor.

Though I don't have the hardware knowledge to actually try it, I've
often envisioned projects exactly like what you've described here.
While it might strain the definition of "Atari 2600 game", since
there's more hardware in the cart than the system, I'd be fascinated
to see what kind of results could be had from such a project.

Dan, if you're serious, I'd be glad for some updates as you progress.

I am serious about getting the vectrex version of such a project up and
running. To the point of me starting to take apart Mame to see how well I
can get star wars running under a custom version of mame, and seeing if I
can hook a mutant version of a vectrex emulator to it as a rendering
engine. (all running in a 68040 emulator, to make my life that much
weirder)

Once I've got that up and going, the rest will be easy.
