Strangely enough with FPSes and RPGs it's mostly the other way around
for me. Once I've played an RPG I won't generally play it again mostly
for two reasons - it's the plot line I enjoy most and I've yet to come
across an RPG where how you play your character changes the plot in any
major ways and secondly I get my moneys worth out of one run through as
I complete most of the side quest. So once I've played it that's it
really. With FPSes it's the action I enjoy with the plot (if any) being
rather secondary - I've played HL2 through about five or six times and
also like the newish idea of being able to select to replay just a
single chapter so I can re-enjoy the really good bits.

Generally I play through at least twice, the second time on a higher difficulty. Sometimes it's
more: I'm currently on my fourth time through Morrowind and thinking about a fifth time.

Morrowind was released in 2002. The game I was playing immediately before it - Hostile Waters - in
2001. I think those 7 years are the longest between release and play for me so far. However I've
owned Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines for many years and haven't played it yet - that was released in
1998. If I get round to playing that I could extend my record to a decade.

For me it depends upon the game really.

I've noticed that over the last couple of years for some games
(typically racing, RPG-likes) I've played them for a week or so on and
off to get the feel of it, then re-started with a better understanding
of how to develop my skills/character to maximise my 'first real'
run-through.

Action-only games I tend to not bother doing this as there is no
'future' penalty for not having understood from the outset the nature of
the game, but particularly with RPGs you could be running for a while
and then realise that you've stuffed your future development, os it
makes sense to me to play this way.

For me it kinda depends on the game. Dark Messiah, finished it 4 times to
get the endings, but saved it from where you make your path choices. Far
Cry- 3 times, mainly because its a nightmare. Vietcong, COD1+2, went through
them on all difficulty settings. RTS games, I tend to do the campaign only
once to get the hang of the game, before venturing online to have my ass
handed to me by some 10 year old nemesis...... I agree with Alfie[UK], about
having a wee go to see if you have stuffed the future development of your
character, I had this problem with Tabula Rasa, but thankfully you can
respec your characters. Then there's simulations, you need to be on them
nearly every day, to try to remember what all the buttons do! I had
neglected FSX for months, and I was flying it on full realism settings. Now
I am back to the flying lessons! At least I can land better now than when I
first had a blast at it. At least Silent Hunters 3+4 have less keys to
remember, and aren't too bad to get back into.

Yes, but there was the option prior to that wether you saved the woman from
the spider creature or not. That's where I saved it then ran through the
game again. I think then you get a bit of conflict with ms goody two shoes
and the demon in your head, but its ages ago now.

Depends on the game. Some games like Deus Ex I have played several times
because they are fun, dull titles like Crysis I just play once.

Benjamin, planning to build up a DOS computer and play "Redneck Rampage"
again

Heck, I hardly ever finish a game once, never mind twice. I don't mind
older graphics, though. Or simpler ones -- we have a couple of Sega
Genesis games on the Wii now, those are fine. It's more about the gameplay
than the graphics, usually.
