What kind of gamer are you?

I rarely play games through. I get immersed in them, and play them
through, and then that's it.

Also, games I loved, often are dated, and the graphics I thought were
awesome then (5+ years from the current date) are horrible in
comparison to today's graphics.

As much as I would LOVE to replay Fallout or Wasteland.. I couldn't
bear the graphics.

But then I see people who do replay games like this and I wonder -
don't the graphics irk you?

Just curious... that is all.

I hardly ever replay a game once I finish it. Exceptions when there
are radical different endings depending on your actions, I would
normally play one full game as a goody character/group, and another
run ignoring most sidequests as a bad guy/group, just to see the evil
ending.
As far as graphics go, I'm with you there. Just last weekend I fired
up Wizardry 8 again, and though the game is as engaging as it was the
first time, the graphics are really bad compared to today's standards.

If it's good then I will replay it a year or two later. I don't want
to replay it back-to-back, though.

I find little replay value in games which consist mostly of a linear
plot of puzzles and story. If the story is multibranching, perhaps.

OTOH, pure skill-based games as Pac-man, Tetris or Tekken may appeal
to anyone, anytime.

Regarding graphics: I've long got past that limitation. Some of my
favorite games today are interactive fiction/text adventures with no
graphics at all. Some of the games which had a very lasting appeal
and immersive feeling on me were Final Fantasy 6 on SNES with its
little sprites and repetitive tiles or Metal Gear Solid one, in which
the characters look more like puppets without faces rather than
persons. I wouldn't play them again, though, but it'd have nothing to
do with the graphics only with them not offering anything new.

This has another added benefit: I don't feel an urge to buy latest
and greatest hardware to play lame games that come with it. I can
slowly expect them to mature and receive lots of good titles before
moving on and buying them at cheap prices.

I really don't replay games. The only games I've replayed is Thief 2
because I wanted to try it on expert where you can't kill anyone, not even
enemy AI. The other game I've replayed was Dues Ex when they came out with
that High Def upgrade or whatever it was called.

I usually don't reaplay, but I've started Morrowind again.

As for primitive graphics - I have played several of the Avernum games,
and they definitely have date graphics. But that doesn't matter to me if
the game is good.

If the game is excellent (Serious Sam) I will play through it many times. If
it is quite good (FEAR) I may replay it once. If it is just plain bad
(Soldier of Fortune 2) then I can barely bring myself to play through it
even once.

For me the problem with old games isn't the graphics, it's the
interface and "modern conveniences" of newer games. For example, I'm
trying to replay the 3rd Realms of Arkania game but the interface is
so clunky that it is tough to enjoy.

Ditto - with CRPGs I have a quick start to see what the game is like,
then I start my 'official' character(s), then I continue until I get
bored.

It can happen that I leave off part way through and pick the game up a
long time later, in which case I'll start again.

Most single-player CRPGs are too long and stuffed with filler, so I
don't usually finish them.

Depends. Dungeon Master graphics would be a strain for me now. But I
could imagine playing games with those or worse all the same.

That's the way I feel. I so want to go back and enjoy many of my old
favorites, but I find i've been spoiled with all the new games. It seems
drudgery now to have to navigate through the old interfaces.

Definitely replay games. As for the graphics, well the game I replay
the most is Dark Forces (circa '95) - 'nuff said.

Typically I play a game all the way through just once, then replay a couple
favourite levels or saved games, then uninstall. COD4 is still on my HD
even though I hate the multiplayer and completed single player before Xmas.
I just love to soak in the set pieces like that one mission on the cargo
ship.

If a game's a real classic I will usually pull it out for a second,
spottier playthrough, skipping the boring parts by using cheats or imported
saves.

I will also replay sections of a game just for the set pieces, or the sense
of being immersed in some crazy environment. I played the Omaha Beach
landing in MOHAA:AA about 50 times back in 2002-2003. I replayed a lot of
Doom 3 and Quake 4 for this reason... the designers really went nuts with
the technofetishism in those games! I've been thinking about playing some
more Bioshock just to take in all the design and architecture.

I also sometimes will revisit an old game after upgrading my gaming system,
to finally experience the game maxed out. Did this with a lot of 2004 games
like Half-Life 2, Doom 3, Far Cry, etc.

I don't think replaying old arcade games counts as "playing through." I
think that phrase implies a game which has a story and a definite
conclusion.

Interesting thread.

Does it count as a replay or playing through again if you never finished in
the first place, but have installed the game for a second time. I'd say no,
for the purposes of this discussion. That's what I recently did with
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

PS I've been installing Alone in the Dark for 20 damn minutes now. Come on
already!

That depends on the game... usually I just do one playthough, maybe a
second one on a harder difficulty.

>Also, games I loved, often are dated, and the graphics I thought were

Graphics is merely how well something can be rendered or drawn. While
there are limitations on computer graphical rendering, it's still
possible to get a wide variety of quality on the same hardware (e.g.
Darius Gaiden has a much nicer background compared to other
autoscrollers at the time.) Unless the game's graphics is going to
look distinctivly unique and impressive, there's no purpose worrying
about them.

>But then I see people who do replay games like this and I wonder -
>don't the graphics irk you?

I'm only irked if the graphics involve CGA, the display mode so
revolting that it makes monochrome look good.

Depends entirely on the game. A couple of examples...

Age of Empires II: Age of Kings and its expansion Conquerors has been on
my PC (reinstalled every time I had a new hard-drive) for 9 years now.
Dip into it almost every week for an hour or so.

AOEIII on the other hand was on the hard-drive for a few days after
release, got uninstalled and I've never tried it since. Graphics
definitely didn't 'make the game' in that case.

Love Darwinia. Played that too many times to count.

I also love FPS and if I enjoy one of those then I'll replay. My most
replayed FPS is Stalker. Must have gone through that ten times.

Played HL2 through two or three times when it came out because it was a
thrilling ride but not for a few years now. Played episode 1 twice but
only played episode 2 once. (With the advances everyone else is making
the HL games are starting to feel very constricted).

Played the first half of Crysis several times but (like Far Cry) when
there are no 'human' opponents I get bored.

If its a good game then I'll also play old 'graphically challenged'
games too. Its a shock when I first load it up but (like all those
years ago) I soon forget or not notice that when I'm in the game.

Also depends on the mood. Whenever I have a few hours to myself I'll
sit and wonder 'what am I in the mood for?' Might be a film, book or
game - they're all on the same shelves surrounding me here. Might be a
little classical, might be the Rolling Stones or might be the Foo's.
Might be The Usual Suspects, might be Lord of the Rings or might be
Cloverfield. Similarly, AOE, Oblivion, Grid or a little shottie action
in a deathmatch.

Must be good enough to hold interest and must suit the mood.

It depends on the genre of game more than anything else for me. For most
shooters there is zero replayability so most of them get thrown into the
wardrobe upon completion never to be seen again. Maybe a very good one gets
another lifeafter a year of two but thats it. Or one that had to be played
at low rez gets tried again after a system upgrade but thats more for a test
than a replay.
RPGs tend to stay on my HD much longer as I usually play through them with
different types of characters
For strategy games it depnds, ones such as Civ or Hearts of Iron are
permanent residents on my HD, others like Supreme Commander or Company of
Heroes are uninstalled quickly
And many Sims (my main area of gaming) could and have been on my HD for
close to a decade.

Old graphics dont bother me too much, but I dont spend too much time trying
to get an old title working properly.
