I know a couple of people in here run more than one 360 and I was
wondering what the deal was with Live IDs and what have you.
I've just bought a 60Gb machine to replace the one in the sitting room
and want to know a few things.
Is it possible to copy my ID and game saves over to the new machine and
maintain the ID on the older machine - I'm thinking mainly of being able
to switch playing a game onto the other machine without having to run a
totally separate ID, or is it simply a matter of transferring saves with
a memory card?
Only the machine in the sitting room will be connected to Live and I'm
not so concerned with gamerpoints.
I think I know what the answer will be.
Bearing in mind I only have about 6-7GB on the old machine and probably
5Gb of that is an install, can I do the switcheroo by plugging the new
machine into the net downstairs, getting my ID off Live and then
transferring game saves via memory card? |

Just move your harddrive around with you. Although it should be noted
that inexplicably you can't play the game you've installed on any 360
other than the one you installed it on without deleting and
reinstalling.

Not even off the game disk rather than the HD? That's a bit daft.

When you transfer your ID to another connected machine, the 360 will ask if
you wish to move your profile and you can do that. However when you switch
on the other machine IIRC it will say that the profile was moved and you get
into a cycle.
But if one of the 360s is not going to be connected to the net then it
should not be a problem. Rather than using the hard drive to swap over you
may be better off saving your games to a memory card and then using that
between consoles to move your saves, that way you don't have to copy content
from drive to drive and you shouldn't come across the DRM problem.
Also I suggest on the non-connected machine you set up a new silver account
that you can use just for dashboard updates. Because as soon as your other
profile is connected again it will come up with the problem of having to
transfer profile as its on another machine. |

Well if you move across the hard drive, like you say in your post, you will
have problems with having to redownload/reinstall content. If he installs
the games on both machines on same ID but uses a memory card just to hold
the gamesaves and move that between consoles there should not be a problem? |

Yeah thats what I suggested in my first post. I think that would be the
best course of action but the ID profile would have to be on both machines
for it to work. So copy the profile to the offline machine then use the
memory card to save games. |

OK, this is what I've discovered. You can move your profile, but you
can't copy it - so you can move it to memory card and keep it there, or
move it to another machine, but there doesn't appear to be anyway to
have it on both machines.
The DRM of XBLA games seems to be independent of profile, so they can be
on both HDDs.
Game saves are attached to profiles, so though you can copy and move
them, they will only work with the profile that originated them. There
appears to be some latitude, but most of them are locked to profiles.
HDD installs aren't locked to the machine as Zo said as I've installed a
couple of games on both machines with no apparent problem that I'm aware
of yet. Obviously they don't even show up as playable unless you have
the disc in so it's a moot point. |

Edited apology to Zo, what I think he meant is that if you install a
game to a HDD and then move the HDD to another machine the game won't
play from the install, so it's locked that way. Is that right, Zo? |

That's correct. I installed GTA 4 on my Elite, moved my HDD to the
Arcade and put the GTA disc in, but because you lose the option to play
from disc once it's installed, I was given a message saying I couldn't
play because it was installed on a different machine, and I had to
delete the install to continue.

Just keep your profile and any saves for games you want to play on both
360s on a memory card. Move memcard between 360s as you wish. Simple as.
XBLA games can be downloaded to both 360s and since you have your
profile with you, you'll be able to play them as long as you are signed
into XBL.
My son does this in our house if he plays upstairs or downstairs he just
brings the memcard with him with his profile and saves. He leaves his
profile permanantly on the memcard. |
