im confused, i hear about mods for WoW, but wow is a server based game i
thought, how can you modify it? is it kinda like the principle of the old
maphack for d2? does blizz allow the mods? what function do they serve?
im so confused, i always thought of mods as being client based and not
applying to server based games, espicially mmorpgs... this is like the
ground openning up underneath me...

First a link:

http://ui.worldofwar.net/

And yes, you can do a lot (but not everything) with a client-based mod.
Some of my favorites are "Auctioneer" which keeps track of auction house
prices and Gatherer which keeps a database of where you found ores or
Herbs, which is very useful as the spawn-location is not random.

Blizzard tend to nerf the abilities of mods a bit from time-to-time,
possibly to counteract botting. That means if you download a mod, you
should not expect it to work when a new version of the client is released.
So always look for mods that are well-maintained, and try to stay away from
mods that has not been updated for a long time.

Today I almost cannot live without mods, they're just so useful many of
them Smile

And yes, many of them are legal, Blizzard even made an API which you can
use to make mods. But there are a few non-legal mods like a "maphack" alike
mod I found some time ago. Just stick with the link I gave you if you want
to stay legal and not risk loosing your account.

I download my mod pack from www.ometh.com. They supply a nice Video on
how to use some of their features and only really supply the important
mods. I cant imagine playing this game without mods.

Also When your level 60 and you want to do the big instances some of
these mods become essential CTRaid, and decursive (depending on your
class). I don't do pick up groups no more they are so hit and miss but
If I were in a raid pickup group with characters without CT raid I
wouldn't bother going for so many reasons.

A mod for WoW is not the same as a Mod for e.g. Half Life. It doesn't
change any of the game mechanics. All you can do with mods is enhance
the UI (in a vast amount of ways).

Yes, the game itself is server based. But, just like many other software
products, individual preferences are stored on the client side. If you are
using Windows, customization data is commonly stored in the folders for the
software, under program files. Check out the files and folders for WoW at
C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft. The Interface folder holds data for
modifications to the User Interface. Click on the Interface folder and you
find a folder for AddOns. There are some files placed in there by Blizzard,
you can download other modification files from various gaming sites.

Most mods you download will need to be unzipped and placed in the C:\Program
Files\World of Warcraft\Interface\AddOns folder. In general, these mods are
perfectly acceptable to use and will not violate the terms of service for
the game (or get you banned). Blizzard has documented its customizable User
Interface for WoW, and has even created an Add-On Kit for developers. There
is a whole forum on the blizzard site devoted to UI modification and macros.
http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/board.aspx?fn=wow-interface-customization

Since I am not an expert, I don't mess with trying to customize things
myself. I *do* use a few mods. My favorite sites to search for mods are
http://norganna.org/ http://www.cosmosui.org/
http://www.curse-gaming.com/en/wow/addons.html

Basically don't use anything that requires an external exe to make it
work. WoW scans your PC and compares it against an apparant known list
of hacks and cracks and other banned exe's. They will ban you if any of
them are found to be running.

The addons in WoW are in LUA and XML format. Don't ask me about the ins
and outs as I have no idea Smile

Take a look at the UI and Customisation forums on the offical WoW sites
for more information.

These old drybones went out and purchased a New Dell XPS 600 with dual
video
cards and 2GB Ram.

Oblivion plays like a dream.

Installed Morrowind / Tribunal / Bloodmoon this afternoon onto the #2
HD
that also has Oblivion installed.

1. Bloodmoon patch d/led from Bethesda, will not install. Said,
"Missing or Invalid Registry /or INI entry. Hit OK then got Old File
does
not exist."

I continued to click on the OK and finally it said completed or what
ever.
Patch did NOT take.

#2. My Dell 20" monitor when Standard Morrowind screen comes up has a
Double
blue line from top to button on the left side of the screen.

I went from 1600 x 1200 to 800 x 600 res and lines still there.

These very old and drybones do not know what to do next to get
Morrowind
Etc. up and running as it did on my past two (2) machines.

Anyone assist with this problem?
Thanks for reading and replying

Try spamming a Morrowind newsgroup?

no its not like maphack they are actually "interface mods" they only
change the look and feel of the game like moving your bars around and
changing your health meter and things like that
they might give you a slight advantage because you can click things
faster but they do not modify the actually server aka. nobody can tell
your using them , does that answer your question ?
