Archived from groups: rec>games>pinball (more info?)

Okay, I've finally gotten back to an embarassing situation - I got a FG
awhile back where there was no sound but 5 flashes. In hooking it up
to a test bed, I believe I accidentally applied +5vdc instead of -5vdc
to -5vdc test point.

In the machine I was now getting 3 flashes, and having it lock on the
third flash.

So first I replaced on the capacitors with Big Daddy's great
replacement kit, hoping that might do something. No luck, same thing -
3 flashes, locking on the third.

Now I can read down the list of flashes, but I've found this - if I
removed U11, I get NO flashes (LED is locked on upon powerup). If U11
is in, I get three flashes.

I though U11 didn't enter the picture until the third flash? Why does
it's absence cause the board to lock as it does?

Suggestions? Help me get this game speaking! Thanks, Quentin

P.S. - I believe the whole reason I couldn't hear sound first was the
speaker - doh.

You might check past newsgroup articles archived through www.google.com for
an article authored by Clive Jones (of UK) a few years back- he wrote up a
nice "theory of operation" on how these boards work, and boot up, which may
be helpful in your diagnosis.

I have a copy (MS Word doc) archived away somewhere if you can't find it on
google... let me know.

Thanks Oliver - I'll check it out. I found a brief mention in Clive's
article indicating that U11 controls the LED, so that much I figured
out.

My TPs all seem to be in order, and though I've done a swap test of U7
and U11, can't recall if there was any difference. But I was
suspecting the PSG chip at U12 judging from what I had seen so far.
Since this board uses the 6808 mpu, it does use a 6810 memory chip in
U6, do I'll order and try swapping out both this and the PSG.

And for all those who might google this later, I'll post the results
once the parts arrive.

Thank you Ray and Oliver for your help - Q

Update - I've replaced all the old capacitors, the PIAs at U7 and U11,
the TMS speech chip, the 6810 memory at U6, and I'm still getting an
LED lockon after a very quick third flash.

Test points return these values:
TP1 GND
TP2 5.13V
TP3 14.7V
TP4 -4.85V
TP5 4.28V
TP6 4.3V

Am I right in thinking I should try replacing the SOUND chip at U12?

Thanks, Q
