My Usenet usage is down to a trickle - this NG and two other completely
dead ones I monitor for the occasional ping.
This is down from *decades* of maintaining at least ten active groups
and a dozen special purpose ones at any time.
Then Comcast shut down their NNTP server, cutting me off completely. My
interest is no longer high enough to pay for a news server, and a quick
riffle through the lists found only very limited services for free. (I
find Google Groups a wretched, unusable mess.)
I wrote off Usenet, and this group... and then made one more check.
There's a great server, news.aioe.org, that permits open connections for
free... but has no binary groups and limits posts to 25 a day. Suits me
fine.
So I'm still here, for what it's worth.
Funny how after 25 years of increasing concatenation of discussion
channels (Fidonet and pay services like GEnie and Prodigy to Usenet), we
suddenly have a complete devolution, and there's *no* "discussion zone"
left on the internet. You have to sign up for various individual forums
on different sites, then tediously maintain your logins and
subscriptions on each, and then laboriously trek from one to the next to
maintain the discussions. No convenient "assemble your own list of
interests in one convenient reader" any more.
*Sigh*. No one really talks any more. They text at each other in blogs.
As with Amigoid, my kids have taken over the heavy use of the accounts
and play far more than my wife and me. They don't quite have the earning
power to pay for it directly but I'm happy to keep it going as a shared
family interest... and I still play, and team with whoever else is on,
regularly.
What a great game. Really.

Hey Shen, glad you didn't fall off into the ether... Comcast hosed me
as well, but luckily I noticed a few suggestions in one of the RPG
newsgroups about alternates for usenet. I tried out Aioe, but found it
lagged alot (often indicating a post hadn't finished sending, when it
had in fact). I've been using motzarella.org lately, really liking it
so far.
I'm with you on the sad progression of things... Been on usenet since
the late 80s, used to spend far too much time in the Unix lab perusing
the groups. Seems like now everyone pushes RSS feeds, and as you said
they tend to "blog banter" which often ends up being a more localized
discussion, only those who know of the blogs see the text. At least
with usenet, it's a universal approach, but sadly it's dying bit by bit
these days.
I've passed the 4 year mark on CoH/V continuous subs, even though I
rarely play these days, I keep it up in case I want to drop in for a bit
- and I like to keep supporting what I think has been one of the best
MMOs to date, particularly because it's a non-standard (as in not a WoW
clone) format. I'm looking forward to seeing how it progresses, and
keeping one eye towards the horizon and the coming release of a few
competitors... Champions I'm watching with a bit of trepidation, it
looks like it could be fun, but may be too "consolized" for me. Already
seeing big signs of that in the DC MMO, not sure I'll ever be drawn into
that particular universe...

CoH/V for me has been one of those games the provides diversions from other
games....I can generally play CoH for about 3 months or so before I have to
move to something else for awhile. If you still like MMO's and want to try
one that does not fall into the same category as WoW take a look at
Asheron's Call....you will find nothing in there that vaguely resembles an
Orc "and" it's a very mature game with a tons of well thought out quests
and a huge world.

"Quests" - I'm gone.
I just don't need a pseudo-Elizabethan matrix in which to play out my
fantasies. I don't do elfy-welfy, magick, quests, runes, swords*, knaves,
mages, knights-errant, or kingly deeds.
I don't even need Keira Knightley or a plummy accent.
*Okay, I do have two sword scrappers, because I'm of the peculiar school
that believes in modern use of the sword.

Ooooo, I dunno about that, I would -always- make room for Keira Knightley to
sit on my lap.. of course, should my wife ever find out where she's
sitting.. |

AT&T killed off a lot of the groups that I normally watched.
I still watch this group.
It's one of the few places, where I can talk game and not worry about
"rednames" nerfing me unless I break EULA for beta. |

I've never quite understood it - my longtime ISP farmed out the newsserver
and the list was all but static. They would not add a small hierarchy for
the local UC even though it had huge traffic into the general townies.
Then Comcast kills their service.
AT&T nerfs theirs.
I mean, it can't cost that much to maintain an NNTP server, not on a large
or national ISP level. If they nuked the .binaries. groups it would
probably cost them nothing but electricity for the server.
But we lose them, and the whole useful resource, for "cost reasons."

I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's "fear" at the potential cost of
monitoring everything should US politicians follow that Australian moron
and make ISPs responsible for what their customers access online.
It's impossible to do really, but that doesn't stop politicians from
insisting it must be done.
Remember a few years back and the "Communications Decency Act"?

Seems unlikely, but it might be one factor.
I really don't understand why the net as a whole moved from collective
communications like Usenet back to fragmented forums on individual sites,
like BBSes. Such a bizarre retro move.
Except that blogs (*shudder*) and RSS feeds have kinda-sorta filled the
gap. With no consistency, no quality control and
quote/comment/thread/typing limitations that make newsreader content look
positively sophisticated.
I hang out on a few blog sites these days and it's immeasurably frustrating
to see vibrant, intelligent discourse broken into 50-word chunks with no
formatting, limited quoting, poor attribution, no threading and basically
no control over flow and display of the discussion. It seems to be good
enough for the Starbucks generation, they of he-man thumb muscles.
*Sigh*.

It could be a matter of increased control over the discourse. It's hard to
ban people off of Usenet after all.

My theory has always been that usenet doesn't reward them.
On a website they get titles, post counts, animated avatars etc.
On usenet, all they have is their name, and often people being rude at
them or mocking them when they say something stupid.
On the websites the rude and mocking get banned, or have their messages
removed, so the frail egos feel safer there.
No real wonder that teenagers go for websites - their egos get protected
and their titles and such make them feel like they matter - even if they
never have anything useful to say.

Actually, that's an interesting point. Increasing the feeling of
"ownership" increases the feeling of involvement - not to get us back
on topic or anything, but one could argue that the high level of
character appearance customization in City of X is one of the reasons
people are often willing to overlook the game's flaws.
On usenet you don't even have your name - not only is it likely to be
spoofed if you ever really annoy anyone, if you actually use your real
one it's certain to be harvested to either send you spam or send other
people spam that looks like it's coming from you. You lack even the
illusion of ownership that a forum website provides. Those of us who
grew up in the era where "customization" meant an interesting email
address and a .sig with ascii graphics may underestimate the psychological
value of "ownership". The idea that a lolcat avatar makes someone feel
more comfortable using something may seem ridiculous, but in psychology
logic does not necessarily apply.

"For the Sake of the Children" has always been the rallying cry of
oppressive idiotic jackasses and will continue to be for many years from
now. Personally I am getting to the point where when someone claims, "It is
for the sake of the children" that I hear instead the jackasses saying, "I
want to stab you and then steal your wallet".
Hell, the morons were whining for "The V-Chip" to "protect the children"
and time has proven that most parents are too damn retarded to even use it
because they still are WHINING. |
