Hi all im new to this newsgroup because im more an adventure game player and
need some help from anyone with this problem, If this sort of asking for
help is not a part of this newsgroup please just delete it or flame me or
whatever... Ide like to play F.E.A.R and tell all you people here how good
it is but I cant get past the second cd in the install progress. Instead I
get a popup saying "feature transfer error" at top of box and :
Feature: default feature
Component: default component
File: F:\data3.cab
Error: data error (cyclic redundancy check)
With an "OK" box that when pressed takes me back to the desktop.
I have disabled my Virus protection when installing, I have tried to copy
the cds to my hard drive and install it from there but I get an error :
"Error copying file or folder" at the top of box and :
"Cannot copy data3: data error (cyclic redundancy check)
This too with the second cd, I have two hard drives and have tried to
install it to both of them as someone said to try it to the default C drive
the one the fear like the most with no luck. I have tried both my cd roms
both are burners one a cd burner the other a dvd burner. I have tried to
change the properties of the "shared documents" folder in "all users" to
uncheck the attributes of "read only" but when I make the change and press
aply it reverts back to the greyed tick in the box, no matter how many times
I change it it reverts back. SSoooo dose anyone know how to get this sucker
to install? Many thanks in advance, Shaun B. |

There was some discussion in this group, about a similar error, not
that long ago.
http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action/browse_thr.../thread
I hope that link wraps OK for you. If not, paste the full URL into
your browser. I would use a "short link" but a lot of people are wary
of such things as they can (and have been) used to lead people to
malicious websites.
If this is indeed the same problem then it is a FAT32 vs NTFS issue.
Good luck anyway.

Do you have Windows 98 ?? Or are you trying to install to FAT32 partition
?
The link Rob gives here Re: Disc problems is IMHO rather an extreme and
unlikly explanation of your problem..
ANYWAY the largest file in a FEAR install is 3.6 Gigs ..within FAT32's 4 Gig
limit ..
Do you have enough Disc space ???
The give-away to my eyes is your error Message;
"Cannot copy data3: data error (cyclic redundancy check)"
This suggests that the FEAR Disc is currurpted and you should get a
replacement
That would be my favourite Bet anyway..

I am struggling so badly with this game. More so than any other
shooter I can remember. Ten or fifteen minutes is the most I can
manage without wanting to gouge my left eye out with the blunt end of
a hammer.
I don't think I've ever played a game that has such a slow "quicksave"
either. Takes about 10 seconds to "quicksave" on my P4 with 3gb RAM.

I know you're not asking for advice, but you may want to try a good
defrag of your hard drive. Diskeeper Pro is worth every penny with it's
"set it and forget it" feature, IMO. |

All suggestions welcome, thanks.
I have defragged and I don't have any other problems, either OS wise
or with other games. Performance wise F.E.A.R runs as smooth as butter
with everything at maximum (1152 x 864 4 x AA & 4 X AF)
I just assumed that it was how it was supposed to be. I'm pretty sure
it was like that last time I had the game installed too.

It's been a couple of months since I played it, but I don't remember it
taking an especially long time on mine. If I can remember I'll fire it
up tonight and see. I've got a 2.8 (running at 2.95) P4 w/ 1 GB RAM,
7800GS. |

Great, thanks.
If it turns out to be a problem with my PC I'll harvest the save game
folder, uninstall, then reinstall to see if that fixes it.

You talking about the feature where it defrags in the background? Doing
that in the background will bring any game to it's knees. I have both
Diskeeper and Perfectdisk and on NTFS they are both pretty much
worthless. The one built into XP is fine and there is no appreciable
difference using a third party version that costs money. NTFS doesn't
even need defragmenting very often. |

Of course not, never do that especially when your gaming. The "set it
and forget it" feature of Diskeeper allows one to schedule a defrag
"after hours" or between any set period of time you choose.
I have both

Sure it does. Diskeeper can also be set to keep the page file from
fragmenting. You can also set it to do a boot-time defrag occasionally
to re-arrange all of the directories (not just files) for added speed
performance.
The version that's built into XP is taken from Executive Software, the
makers of Diskeeper, but it can't do what I mentioned above.
Very good investment, IMO. |

I'm guessing you've never played Vampire: Bloodlines. Great game, but
God-damn, the time it takes to make a savegame gets worse and worse as
you progress further through the game. Near the end of the game it was
getting into 20+ seconds, which kinda changed how I played. Vary rarely
saved after that, which I guess did help make things more fun as you
couldn't easily quickload due to a non-recent savegame. |
