Post subject: How to install the Sims 2 expansions without SecuRom ?
Archived from groups: alt>games>the-sims (more info?)

I currently have The Sims 2 base game, University, Nightlife, Open
for Business, Pets and Seasons. I think those are the only ones that
don't have Securom on them ? I have none of the stuff packs or any
hacks whatsoever. I wanted to buy Bon Voyage a year or so ago but I
didn't because of all the bad things I heard happening and as such
didn't want to take a chance of messing up the computer I shared with my
roommate.

In the meantime I have read a lot about no-cd-cracks where you can play
Bon Voyage and the other expansions without downloading Securom onto
your computer. Could somebody explain to me what this no-cd-crack is
exactly and how it is obtained/used ? I would love to get the new
Mansions and Gardens stuff pack as well as Bon Voyage, Free Time, and
Apartment Life but haven't a clue how to do it without having Securom
tag along for the ride. Thank you for any info Smile

You will find the noCD cracks for all Sims2 expansions here:

Scroll down till you find the one you need for your EP. Download it.
This is actually a new .exe file for the game. You will go to
C:\Program Files\EA Games\{expansion name}\TSBin and remove the .exe
file from that folder. Put it someplace SAFE where you can find it
later if you need to replace it (to install a patch for instance). Now,
copy and paste the noCD crack you just downloaded to that TSBin folder.
Make certain that your desktop or Start Menu shortcut points to this
noCD cracked .exe file and NOT to the Sims2Launcher.exe file (as it will
by default). Then, all you have to do is remove your CD from the drive,
click on the shortcut and you are good to go.

So by not having it activate the Sims2Launcher, but activating the new
exe. file instead, this would prevent Securom from launching ? But
wouldn't Securom be already on my computer as a result of just
downloading the retail expansion ?

Securom 7.5 as used on the Sims 2 expansions will either install on the computer as
visible files and/or keys in the registry, it may even install as hidden or it may not
install itself at all. It installs early during the installation of the expansion pack,
therefore it is not possible to avoid its installation.

Using a no CD crack will avoid Securoms disk checking routine but it does NOT prevent
Securom from installing on the computer.

Thank you for the info. I went to the site suggested and will probably
start trying out the expansions with the no cd crack. Not happy about
Securom ending up on my computer after all but if it can be kept from
launching I am sure it is not so bad.

Thanks alot Smile)

Well, not really. It would prevent Securom from checking the disk.

Yes. But Securom version 7.5 as used on the Sims 2 games doesn't do anything but check the
disk. Even if it installs it doesn't do anything else.

Many would disagree:-) Securom is a program and can - in theory - do anything a program
can do.

If Securom 7.5 is installed on the computer the visible part of it can be removed with a
little program called Trashreg which you can find if you use google and search for Remove
securom or something like that. You can also use regedit to search for Securom but regedit
can't remove the "null" string.

Securom may also add things to existing keys in the registry. These may be a little harder
to find because the Securom name isn't used.

So far, Securom hasn't seemed to my harm my computer at all. (Steam
has), however it seems that Securom was installed on my computer
without my knowledge, and that's one thing that bothers me about it.

I don't have any of The Sims 2 expansion packs that use it, yet.

However, I have found out that I have several other games, from
various companies, which use Securom.

You'll most likely begin to see the problems with Secueom when they
begin online drm management like Steam does.

Steam automatically sends their updates ro your game and itself
whether you want them or not.

What if you have a compneuter that doesn't have enough ram or hard
disk space for what they're trying to install?

Deleting things is NOT an acceptable answer since some people need all
the other programs on their computer for some reason or another.

Not to mention that Steam actually tried to prevent me from
uninstalling it, and tried to prevent itself from uninstalling after I
tried uninstalling it.

Steam might seem benign to you while it's installed on your computer,
but when you try to uninstall it, it then it shows it's true colors.

And both I and other people have had our computers messed up by Steam.
